Book Description

Return to The Summer Of Love.
The Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco in 1967. Alex Conley, a part-time writer for a Baltimore newspaper, is dispatched to chronicle the events occurring there. It is June of 1967, and the summer of love is in full swing.

Alone, in this strange and magical place, he meets a girl named Sarah, a free spirit who is as mysterious as she is beautiful.

What are the secrets of her past? Why does she dance each night under the light of the moon? These are just a few of the puzzles Alex needs to solve in the short time he has in that city.

Then there's another complication. He is beginning to fall deeply in love with her.

Review

I picked the book up and could not put it down. Very well written. This book would make a great movie. - David Simpson - author of Loch Raven
Whether you lived through the sixties or not, Randy Mixter's Sarah of the Moon is one story you will remember long after you have finished reading it. - Jeffrey Miller - author of Ice Cream Headache
Mr. Mixter's ability to communicate in a thought provoking way is a rare find. Not just a novel for Baby Boomer's, but for anyone who would enjoy an `up close and personal' novel about the hopes and dreams of youth. - Underground Book Reviews
After the first two chapters, I was sucked in and couldn't put it down. - Natalie Valdes - author of Nirvana

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must read January 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was so excited to have found this book because my dad was born in 1949 in San Francisco, and to this day he is what you would call an old school hippie. I hated anything to do with that when I was a child and was horribly embarrased by my father, and even cringed when tyedye came back into style several years ago, but reading this book gave me a piece of what my fathers early years were like and helps me to understand him more. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the man, he's my hero, I was just a normal teenager who was embarrased by her parents.

This book was written so well, it was amazing. I felt like I was on the streets of San Fransisco and I was going to pass by a much younger version of my dad at any moment. I love all types of books and feel that I grow every time I read something as amazing as this one. I loved Sarah so much and how she was mysterious and slowly started to give pieces of herself away.

Spoiler Alert: The car scene was so dang terrifying. First the way the previous chapter ended making me wonder what was going to happen, and then I could practically feel the tension as he was running. I'm trying to say this without giving things away. My heart was pounding. Also another scene with the officers, I actually laughed out loud, making my husband ask what was so funny. I rarely laugh out loud when reading. I will smile, or cry, but rarely laugh.

This book has it all, mystery, romance, history, and teaches us to have compassion for things that we just don't unerstand. This book was written so well. You will certainly be missing out on something special if you don't read this amazing book. I also went and looked at the author's profile and found it really interesting that he served in Vietnam and was still able to write something so compelling. It wasn't done as a political statement, and it wasn't done trying to preach one side verses the other. It was done so tastefully and uniquelly and I will definetly buy more of this authors work. Amazing Book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story December 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This story took me way back...Nothing was left behind, and it stayed true to the era. The struggles that Alex had to endure to 'fit in', were really written well. After finishing this book, I found myself at a loss for words. This is truly a multi-faceted story, like a diamond that shines in many directions. I could see Sarah dancing in my mind, and I feel all of Alex's love for her..The cover is beautiful.
A very, well written work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn On Tune In and Drop Out March 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
I've wanted to review this book for awhile and haven't had a chance. Before I start I am going to be up front and tell you that Randy is an old friend and we have known each other about forty years, give or take. So, you can skip this or read an objective and heartfelt review.
Randy did the 60's in Baltimore, and so no, he never got to San Francisco. I lived in northern New Jersey, so neither did I, but that does not mean that the tremendous influence of the city didn't affect us. By age 13 I knew about just about every obscure band from the Bay area and was listening to them night and day. I went to see "Psych-Out" at the drive in, watched "The Trip" and was immersed in the culture. A few years later when I met Randy, the basis of our friendship was that he was the same. We were immersed in San Francisco psychedelia.
I am not a fan of romance or love stories, so I approached "Sarah" from the perspective of history. I am a professional historian, did a radio show called "The Psychedelic Flashback" for ten years and got to meet and talk to many of the figures who created the initial social experiment in the Haight back in 1965/1966. I have met the late Chet Helms, Ron Elliot, Declan Mulligan, Peter Albin, Barry Melton, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Signe Anderson ( a good friend), Darby Slick, John Cippolina, Peter Kraemer. Roky Erickson, John Ike Walton and others. I was around then, I listened to the music, I've met many of the people and I can say that the background research for this book was impeccable. This was written from the point of view of someone who wore those clothes, listened to that music and loved that era. Sure, since he didn't LIVE in the Haight, Randy turned to books and films and records for his research, whats wrong with that? That is what anyone who is going to write about a specific topic does. Mary Renault didn't have to live in Mycenaean Athens to write "The King Must Die."
I knew girls like Sarah. They were innocent (especially before 67 started to turn hippiedom sour), naive and sweet. In high school I remember one I will call Kris. She was a free spirit, experimental and I was in awe of her, had a crush on her and was deathly afraid of her! Sarah is NOT a two dimensional character or a cliche. 1965/1966 flower children WERE like that. It also is not weird for a provincial newspaper like the Baltimore Sun to send an inexperienced young man to SF to get to understand and report on the experiment going on there. Who would you send, an idealistic young man or Walter Cronkite? Really...if you wanted the inside story. "Sarah" rings true, is WELL RESEARCHED and a must read for anyone who recognises the names Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, the 13th Floor Elevators, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Grateful Dead, the Charlatans or Big Brother and the Holding Company.
As I said, I normally would not read a love story, but one set in the Haight in 66/67? Oh Yeah! I'd listen to the 13th Floor Elevator's "Easter Everywhere" or Airplane's "Take Off" lp while reading this. Also light some Nag Champa!
