Defective After a Few Months,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sarah Peyton Convection Cooled 10-inch Queen-size Memory Foam Mattress (Kitchen)
This was a great mattress. It was comfortable and supportive, however, one other reviewer had the exact same problem I do. I bought this mattress last July or so, and by September, I notice that the sheets wont stay on properly on one side of the bed (they will bunch up on one side, like they're being pulled, which eventually pulls the sheets off one or both corners). I kept fixing the sheets like it was my sleeping that was causing it. Eventually I rotated the mattress to discover the same problem happening on that same side (now facing a different wall).
What was happening was that the layers of the mattress were separating and sliding, which was bunching up the top layer into one side. If I put my hand over the edge of the bed, there is a 2-3" ledge from the layer below it. The problem can be fixed by opening the mattress and realigning the layers, however, this is extremely tedious and only temporary (it will be back to how it was within a week). Unfortunately, I could not find any contact information on Sarah Peyton and neither could Amazon. Fortunately, Amazon has granted me an exception to return this item, I only have to pay shipping. Summary: The layers of the mattress eventually loosen and slide around, which does not allow sheets to hold on properly to the mattress. It also has the potential to stretch and damage sheets as well. Edit: Amazon paid for my return shipping and refunded me with 20% off of what I paid.

We just received our new mattress three days ago. I was a bit skeptical because I was buying a mattress over the internet that I'd never even felt. I was even more skeptical when I saw the thin rolled up mattress waiting on the patio when I got home from work. But as soon as we got it into our bedroom and peeled the many layers of plastic wrap off, it immediately began to "puff up" and look more like a regular mattress. I was expecting to smell the horrible scent many of the other reviewers were experiencing, but there was none. Maybe the manufacturers have finally caught on and pre-aired the mattreses? At any rate, I patiently waited 48 hrs before I tried the mattress out even though I'm sure it was ready the next day. The mattress felt very firm compared to our old one but you could instantly feel it conforming to your body. I must have fallen asleep right away, which is something that rarely ever happens except when I'm really exhausted. I woke up almost 9 hours later completely rested and I was in the same position I was in when I fell asleep. I don't know that I didn't switch positions throughout the night, but there was definitely none of my usual flip-flopping. There was no back pain of any kind. I usually experience a bit of stiffness and acheyness... but there was nothing. I'll definitely be recommending this mattress to those I know shopping around for a new mattress. And as soon as we get moved into our new home, we'll be buying another one for the guest room. I just hope they don't get too comfortable that they'll never want to leave.

This is our first memory-foam mattress, and we were nervous to order it sight unseen from Amazon. Our experience with the Sarah Peyton 10" cool sensations memory foam mattress has been really good. We were using a top-of-the-line Ortobom (in Brazil) spring-coil mattress, firm.
First, you can't beat the price. $375 is cheap for any mattress, much less memory foam. It arrived within three days and puffed up to it's working height within eight hours. I barely noticed the chemical smell that I'd been prepared for by previous reviews. My wife and I, she of 110 pounds and I of double that, both find the mattress very comfortable, although we don't know if we'll ever get accustomed to the indentations that stay in the memory of the foam for 30 seconds to 1 minute after switching positions. The other night, she fell into one of my indentations and it apparently didn't restore itself while she was "in the hole." In the month since we have been using this memory-foam mattress, we've had the chance to experiment with others. Our next mattress will probably be a pillow-top of some type, but I think that we're likely to stick with memory-foam core and not return to springs. Pros: price, comfort, speedy delivery Cons: working perfectly according to design so as not to create pressure, the indentations in the memory of the foam require a bit of getting used to but are in no way overly obtrusive or a deal breaker.

I've had it for about a week now, its my first memory foam mattress, firm but comfortable. it has that chemical smell for a couple days but it goes away, it doesnt come with any instructions but basically open it up, wait a day (or a couple hours like me) for it to expand and release its smell and its an awesome night sleep. i still cant figure out who sarah peyton is or why she sells mattresses but i like her stuff. the cover is removable too which is convenient. i definitely recommend this to people on a budget with back pain, i live in Hawaii where shipping can rip a fat hole in your wallet, this was free shipping, i love you amazon! the beds cool too.

I'm a 5'8 175lb. man with a muscular build and find that my body sinks in areas I don't think it should with this bed. I bought it b/c people were reviewing how firm it is...this is not the case with me. My back has been hurting and I'm considering getting rid of it b/c it's not worth the pain. My girlfriend likes it, but she is smaller (5'3, 110). Definitely not as firm as some reviewers made it out to be.
UPDATE: After 1 year, I give up. This bed is very uncomfortable. I never had back problems until I had this bed! I just spent this past Sunday laying on the floor because my back hurt so badly. I'm not exaggerating. I don't recommend getting these low end foam mattresses unless you are very light and sleep alone in bed. They are knock offs of the high-end Temperpedic mattresses, but don't come close to the quality.

I received my mattress in November '09 but didn't start using it regularly until March '10 due to moving to a new home. I loved it for a short time. Now it's only mid-June and the foam layers are already seperating. The "overlaid" non-flammable fabric has pretty much disingrated. What was left of it caused lumps under the removable/washable cover.
Now I can't find any of the paperwork or warranty info that I received with it. I guess I'm stuck with a mattress that probably won't last much longer. It's too late to return through Amazon, my fault since I didn't use it right away to find out what the mattress is really like. Live/learn. Update July 13, 2010. Now mid-July and foam layers are barely together. I found out this has a 30 day warranty! I don't know how I missed that bit of info when I ordered it. I would never do that again. This is NOT a bargain. Pay a little more for a better brand. Update August 3, 2010. Now shopping for a new mattress.

The mattress has not yet fully expanded to a perfectly rectangular cuboid. It still remains curved upwards at one end!! I had ordered a queen size mattress and I received what was "supposed to be" a queen-size. However, the dimensions are not those of a queen mattress. My queen-sized fitted sheets are too small for this mattress and king size is too big. Moreover, if you sit on this mattress, you sink to its bottom (literally 10 inches down!) within about a minute - talk about non-firm!!! It offers absolutely no back support as memory foam is supposed to. My back actually hurts when I try to sleep on this mattress. Before I bought the mattress, I thought that the chemical smell wouldn't bother me and that I would air the mattress properly. But, once you get it, you will realize that it has been sitting in a dirty warehouse for god knows how long, in a rolled-up and compressed state. When you get it and open it, it actually smells filthy (not just like chemicals, but more like a dirty chemical factory) and as I mentioned at the start of the review, it never really expands to a proper cuboid due to its extended stay in the compressed state. I have bought two other memory foam mattresses from Costco and they are wonderful! They are a couple hundred dollars more expensive than Sarah Peyton, but they have perfect dimensions, are rolled up right before they are shipped to you and expand to full size within 20 seconds!! While buying Sarah Peyton, I was trying to save some money on the guest bedroom's mattress, but I now know that this was a horrible decision. I would give it zero stars or negative stars if that were possible. Please, please do not buy this mattress. If $400 is your budget, you can get really good standard mattresses and if you absolutely want memory foam, then please go purchase from Costco.

WORST BUYING EXPERIENCE EVER,

This review is from: Sarah Peyton Convection Cooled 10-inch Queen-size Memory Foam Mattress (Kitchen)
FIRST LET ME STATE I AM GIVING THIS A 1 STAR BECAUSE ITS THE LOWEST YOU CAN GIVE. IF I COULD GIVE THIS REVIEW A NEGATIVE 5 STARS I WOULD. both in terms of quality of mattress and amazon's return process. this is by far the worst experience ive ever had buying anything off amazon.
first, i get the mattress pretty quickly, in true amazon style. kudos. open it up, give it a few days to open up and air out, all the stuff you do with a memory foam mattress. i was gone for the holidays so worked out quite well, didnt have to smell any chemicals or worry about anything. when i came back i slept on the thing for about a week, noticing that my back was hurting significantly more day by day. my roommate has a nice tempurpedic mattress and ive slept in his before multiple times with no problems whatsoever, so i know its not just my back adjusting to a new style of mattress. when i bothered to analyze the situation i realized what others seem to have noticed as well, this mattress SUCKS. it doesn't "conform to your body" like foam mattresses should, it just sinks in your mid section so its like you're sleeping in a giant hole, but not quite you sleeping in a giant hole, just your middle. i am 6'3" and i weigh 180 lb and my girlfriend is 5'3" and i would guess weighs about 115 lb. i would categorize us as average people, not extremely overweight and not paper thin. and we both notice that this mattress is destroying our backs. so at this point, we decide the mattress has to be returned, plain and simple. i call amazon and talk to a person at great length about returning the thing, having to explain how and why the mattress is not working out, with them questioning me the whole time about if i'm sure it's not just the foam thing and i'm not used to it, etc. and i have to explain to them that no mattress made properly has your butt just sinking in a hole with the rest of you up above, i dont care what style of mattress it is. finally they tell me i have to schedule a pickup from ups or fedex since i only have a bicycle and cant exactly take the mattress into a local post office. amazon says that i arrange everything myself and then they will reimburse me the shipping costs. ok, off to call fedex/ups. next i spend wayyyy too long on the phone with those two companies trying to track down somebody who can give me a quote on shipping this mattress back to amazon. they quote me at $366. now i know what amazon told me, but i couldn't believe that they would reimburse me $366 to return a $400 mattress. the representative from the shipping place also told me that amazon has an account with them, so it would be way cheaper to have them schedule a pickup than just myself shipping as an individual. seems to make sense to me. so once again, off to call amazon to verify that this is, in fact, the method they want me to use to return this POS mattress. i talk to a representative for a while and after having to retell the whole scenario, they verify that is the method i need to use. this still seems fishy to me, so i tell them i want to speak to their supervisor. after going through the whole thing AGAIN with this new person (lets just assume from here on out that i have to tell my whole story to everyone i talk to and every time it takes way longer than it actually should because every time a new representative enters the scenario, thats exactly what happens), they say that they can call ups, and i was right for assuming that $366 was too much to expect them to reimburse me. thank god i did not make the mistake of listening to the first 2 people i spoke with at amazon, because i would have probably had this thing returned already and been out a significant chunk of change that wouldn't have been reimbursed. so at this point i stay on hold while the supervisor arranges a pickup with ups. im told that ups will call me within 2 days to schedule a pickup. done for now. 6 days pass with no call from ups, so i call amazon again to say what the hell. spend a while on the phone with a new person who again schedules something with ups. im told ups will call sometime within the next 2-5 business days to schedule a pickup. fast forward a couple days to today, when my room mate answers the doorbell to find a UPS driver here to pickup unannounced, no phone call whatsoever. room mate comes upstairs to tell me my pickup is here, and of course i am not prepared for it since no advance notice was given whatsoever. in a mad dash, i take all the pillows, sheets, everything off the mattress and get my room mate to help me carry it all the way downstairs. by the time we get to the front door, guess what? UPS driver has left, and we're standing there with a mattress for no reason. so i immediately rush upstairs to call UPS and tell them their %$#@&* driver came with no advanced notice and then left as soon as he showed up and now i have a mattress by my front door thats going to be a pain in the ass to bring back upstairs again, and can they please tell the driver to turn around since he cant be more than like 5 blocks away at this point. they tell me that since amazon scheduled the pickup, i have to call amazon and tell them that I MISSED A PICKUP. you've got to be kidding me right? so now i call amazon back, just trying to get them to call ups and tell that driver to turn around and come get the thing he was supposed to pickup in the first place. but of course, it turns into a lengthy phone call where as i give the whole back story the driver is getting further away by the minute. this new person at amazon tells me that the whole thing has been done wrong from the start, and UPS should have never entered the equation. she says that i should have been transfered to some large shipping department with amazon and they should have used this service called CEVA to come get it, cuz thats the standard protocol for big shipment items. so now, im supposed to wait another couple days, and apparently i am going to here from CEVA to schedule a pickup time. and here i am with this same crappy mattress downstairs by my front door. im about to go get it and bring it back upstairs and set it up again in my room, just to use for possibly two days and turn around and bring it back down. in the heat of the driver leaving and having to call UPS/amazon i decided that i had to come on here and write a review because this is just ridiculous at this point and people need to know what theyre getting into before they buy this garbage. i must say, this mattress is horrible and i dont reccommend it to anyone. but im sure for some people it probably works. i dont know how or why, but im sure it does. but more than anything, im really dissatisfied with amazon's horrible customer service, and i probably will not be buying anything large from them again, be it a mattress, tv, furniture, whatever, just because i know what hell they put you through just trying to do the simplest of returns. unfortunately i live in a tiny apartment and there isn't room for much, otherwise i would just store this defective mattress somewhere and go get a nice new comfortable one. so i am going to continue using this horrible thing until CEVA comes to get it, and then i am IMMEDIATELY going to go to a local mattress shop and having them deliver me a tempurpedic. im sure it will cost three times as much as this thing, but to never have to deal with a process like this again and to be guaranteed a good nights sleep, i think its worth it.

IMO these types of mattresses blow spring mattresses out of the water. This "Cool Sensations Memory Foam Mattress" is very much on the firm side. If you are a side-sleeper, you will wake up with a sore shoulder and neck, because the mattress does not allow enough give to let you sink in far enough to accommodate the shoulder you sleep on. An excellent choice for back-sleepers, though. A great mattress because you don't bother the person sleeping next to you if you have to get up in the middle of the night - it does not make any noise or movement at all if you get up or lie back down.

Uncomfortably hot, with a ditch in middle,

This review is from: Sarah Peyton 10-Inch Convection Cooled Memory Foam Mattress (Kitchen)
I am sorry I bought this. I wish I'd bought a standard mattress, with maybe a memory foam topper. First, it takes 2 full days to air it out and to regain shape, no problem, but use a garage or very well vented area, harsh chemical smell. But sleeping on it is not comfortable. The sink-in/ bounce back feature is slow, so when you move or change positions, you fall back into the "ditch" of your previous position. It takes forever for it to reshape it's self and feels like sleeping on hard lumps.
The worse feature is that it holds so much body heat that I awake with damp pajamas and damp sheets. There is nothing to solve this, it packs in the natural body heat right next to the skin and feels miserable, almost burning hot. I am not a sweaty person, and usually like to sleep too warm for many people's taste, but this thing is awful! I'm also very concerned about long-term cleanliness as it can not possibly fail to absorb body moisture when it sucks back air to reshape it's self. Even with frequent changing of sheets and mattress pad (like every 3 or 4 days), I will be feeling that it's filled with old sweat inside (yuck). $300 paid for a bed I hate sleeping on. I can hardly justify buying something to replace it after spending so much. I will have to keep using it untill I can afford something else. |
