My wife got this for me as a Christmas gift. We finally unboxed it yesterday and placed it on our headboard.

The directions approximate 6 oz of water. I estimate that it took closer to 10. The motor is noisy -- far noisier than the very occasional water sounds that we hear. In fact, if it weren't on our headboard, we probably wouldn't actually hear any water sounds over the pump.

But, really, what do you expect from something as cheap as this is?

I would steer away from this fountain. I thought the background would be a nice stone color. It was almost stark white. the water trickles over the plastic and doesn't make any sound. The motor is a lot louder than the actual water.

Edit: fountain blew up and corroded the batteries before I even used one set up batteries. You get what you pay for
