Fleeing a physically abusive husband, Sarah Shaw takes refuge in Whitby, a fishing port, where she finds a position at West Cliff House as governess to Robin McMaster, a crippled and sickly child. Robin's father, John, is driven to the edge of madness by having a child whose very existence reminds him of the death of his wife. Sarah sets her sights high for her charge. She teaches him how to play the piano, and much to her surprise, he is naturally talented. With Sarah's help, John and Robin actually start to bond. John also finds himself attracted to his new governess, and she to him. Everything is going swimmingly, until Sarah's husband shows up. Set in Victorian Yorkshire, the tale's isolated mansion, brooding hero, is-she-or-isn't-she-homicidal housekeeper, and young woman in danger have all the ingredients of a classic gothic romance. Fans of Victoria Holt, Janet Tanner, and Mary Stewart will embrace Hardy.
