Sweet and satisfying, Sarah s Choice is a perfect weekend diversion. Perhaps it s enough to say that I read this book in its entirety on a rainy Sunday afternoon in front of a warm crackling fire with a nice cup of coffee. Sarah's Choice (Brides of Leigh Canal #3)
By Wanda E. Brunstetter
Published by Barbour

Sarah's Choice, the newest addition to the Brides of Leigh Canal series, takes us into the life of Sarah Turner, widowed mother of three and lock tender on the Leigh Canal in Walnutport, Pennsylvania. Since the tragic death of her husband in a boating accident, Sarah has been forced to take over his rigorous duties at the lock in order to support her family. Her one dream is to escape the banks of the canal and move her precious children far away from its dangerous shores.

When Elias Brooks takes over his grandfathers canal boat against the wishes of his father, he has nothing in mind other than fulfilling his grandfathers wishes. Elias quickly learns that captaining a canal boat is a lot more challenging than it seems and he's continually drawn to and distracted by the town and people of Walnutport. In particular the mistress of the lock and her spirited son Sammy. Yet Elias knows that no woman would be interested in a man who's face is marred with a hideous birthmark, and besides that, another man has made his intentions known.

What Sarah and Elias each must decide for themselves is what is most important to them. A question that takes them on a journey that is not at all what either expected.

Sweet and satisfying, Sarah's Choice is a perfect weekend diversion. Perhaps it's enough to say that I read this book in its entirety on a rainy Sunday afternoon in front of a warm crackling fire with a nice cup of coffee. Those who have read her books know that Brunstetter's writing is like comfort food for the soul and Sarah's Choice was no exception.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Third Installment, But Not My Favorite. February 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley to review. I am under no obligation to write a positive review, just an honest one.

Sarah's Choice is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series by Wanda E. Brunstetter.

You can read my review of the first book, Kelly's Chance, here.

You can read my review of the second book, Betsy's Return, here.

And now, I have finished the third book in the series.

If you have read my prior reviews, you know that Brunstetter has not traditionally been my favorite author.

I have to say though, over time this series has grown on me. I read the third book in this series in just a few hours. I finished it less than 24 hours after I started it.
Sarah is Kelly's older sister who ran off at a rather young age to marry Sam in order to escape life along the canal. During the prior books you find out she has had a rather turbulent marriage as there was a period that Sam walked out on Sarah on their kids and was drunk, a lot.

We find out that Sam had returned to his family, cleaned up his act, and he and Sarah had settled down along the canal. However, life as a lock tender was rather dangerous, so one day Sam was killed in a tragic accident. The book picks up with Sarah as a widow who has made the choice to take over the duties as a lock tender, traditionally a man's job, in order to make a living to care for her three young children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Historical Lehigh Canal Book March 29, 2011
By Maureen
Format:Paperback
Synopis: Widowed Sarah Turner has her hands full, raising three young children, tending the lock on the canal, baking bread, and washing clothes for boatmen. Although she's not looking for love, she's vowed not to lose her heart to a boatman. Yet she didn't count on meeting Captain Elias Brooks. Will she follow her heart where it leads or accept the proposal of a handsome land-loving blacksmith?

This is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal Series, and we now find Sarah a widow and mother of three young children. She is doing a man's job of physical labor in tending the Lock on the Lehigh Canal. She also makes bread to sell to the boatmen ...in her spare time. Sarah has always hated living on the water...she used to walk the mules for her father. When she married Sam she never thought she would be back, and definitely doesn't want her children to have any part of it.

The way of life on the canal is of historical interest and in this book you see the writing on the wall that it is going to be coming to an end...the train will be taking over.

I found this book to be an extremely fast read. Love the Christian aspect in this book, and how even tough Canal men find the Lord.

I enjoyed the character of Elias, he is a kind, considerate, and Godly man. Loved his interaction with the children.
I would recommend this book, although I did find parts to be predictable.

More About the Author

Wanda Brunstetter is an award-winning romance novelist who has led millions of readers to lose their heart in the Amish life. She is the author of over 60 books with more than 7 million copies sold. Many of her books have landed on the top bestseller lists, including the New York Times, USA Today, Publisher's Weekly, CBA, ECPA, and CBD. Wanda is considered one of the founders of the Amish fiction genre, and her work has been covered by national publications, including Time Magazine and USA Today.

Wanda's fascination with the Amish culture developed when she met her husband, Richard, who grew up in a Mennonite church, and whose family has a Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Meeting her new Mennonite sister-in-laws caused Wanda to yearn for the simpler life. In their travels, she and her husband have become close friends with many Amish people across America. Wanda's desire to explore their culture increased when she discovered that her great-great grandparents were part of the Anabaptist faith.

All of Wanda's novels are based on personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life. Many of her books are well-read and trusted by the Amish, who credit her for giving readers a deeper understanding of the people and their customs.

Wanda's primary attraction to the Amish is their desire to live a devout Christian life that strives to honor God, work hard, and maintain close family ties. Whenever she visits her Amish friends, Wanda finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity, and close family ties, which is in stark contrast to the chaos and busyness that plagues so many modern "Englishers." Time and time again, Wanda loses her heart in the Amish life, and she hopes her readers will, too. For more information, visit: www.WandaBrunstetter.com
