Grade 4-8–What would happen if you mixed up the Little Rascals with Pirates of the Caribbean, and shot them off into space? Hopefully, something nearly as delightful and entertaining as this title. Sardine is traveling the universe with her uncle, Captain Yellow Shoulder; her cousin Louis; plus a cast of random creatures that appear to make up their crew. Time and again, they find themselves facing off against their nemesis, Supermuscleman. Each of the 12 stories is a quirky and slightly irreverent adventure, with surreal turns and silly jokes that kids will love. Translated from the French, the book may surprise American adults with its slightly risqué illustrations (the most glaring example is when Louis's outline can be seen in silhouette as he urinates), but children will just be highly amused by the gentle bawdy humor. The impish graphic novel protagonists Sardine and her uncle Yellow Shoulder return in 12 enjoyable, nutty tales of the fun-loving space pirates versus the slow-witted galactic dictator Supermuscleman. The collection occasionally attains the height of gross absurdity (chocolate-defecating flies whose bite induces a sort of disco-coma) and now and then takes satirical shots at targets such as television, salesmen, and George W. Bush. In addition, the French creative team's European sensibility and unapologetic lowbrow humor--barf jokes and shenanigans such as sidekick Little Louie's urinating-on-a-planet trick (shown only in silhouette)--give the book an illicit, forbidden-fruit appeal that some readers will find irresistible. Sfar, whose recently imported Dungeon series is gaining well-deserved attention, casts the loopiness in sometimes crude, off-kilter visuals that imbue the stories with their crucial weirdness. On proud display here is the idea that children are our last line of defense against a world that is increasingly bound by stiff guidelines and unnecessary rules. Jesse Karp

More About the Author

Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor's Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980's Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefevre.

Even though I'm an adult, I have to admit I really love these books. Sardine 2 is as good as the first, and the kids I know who've read it agree (my friend's a teacher, and has shown them to her class). I think Sardine is a terrific role model for young girls--kick butt!

Our children - ages girl age 7 and a boy age 5 - LOVE the sardine series. Sardine 1 starts as a more or less straightforward romp though space but as the series has progressed the characters have become more self aware and complex. I strongly recommend this book.
