Book Description

October 2, 2007 6 and up1 and upSardine in Outer Space (Book 4)
Sardine is back, and she's got a whole host of new problems to face even before the spaceship Huckleberry can get off the ground! In the fourth volume of this exciting series, Sardine must tackle, among other things, monsters under the bed, flesh-eating tattoos, time machines, and even boredom. As always, Supermuscleman, Chief Executive Dictator of the Universe, lurks in the background, trying--unsuccessfully and incompetently--to make Sardine and her crew behave.

From Booklist

Sardine and the crew of the Huckleberry are back for more exciting adventures. Flesh-eating tattoos, a kidnapped princess—the life of a space pirate is never quiet, especially when Supermuscleman and Doc Krok get up to mischief. With the usual sly humor and gleefully childlike sense of the absurd, Guibert and Sfar offer bizarre, memorable characters and a delightfully surreal story. A few small details may make grown-ups raise an eyebrow (Supermuscleman gets a tattoo on his bottom), but kids will love the art, the bright colors, and the nonsense. Coleman, Tina

Review in 1st November 2007 School Library Journal

Gr 4-7— Nine stories irreverently capture a child's offbeat, often overly literal view of the world. Sardine and her friends Little Louie and Captain Yellow Shoulder are space pirates, out for fun, adventure, and the never-ending fight against Supermuscleman, chief executive dictator of the universe. In one selection, they find out that all children have a monster assigned to their bed to frighten them, and then move it to a grown-up's bed; in another, they find a baby rocket that fell from its nest and tenderly nurse it back to health with kerosene. The shaky lines and bright colors of Sfar's drawings evoke a childlike simplicity and exuberance. Young readers may not understand all of the jokes, but they should be entertained by the limitless fount of silly ideas and the array of whimsical space creatures, including the ghost Pallid Pete and Octo the octopus.— Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

More About the Author

Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor's Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980's Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefevre.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing series of books for young children (4), November 16, 2010

This review is from: Sardine in Outer Space 4 (Paperback)
Our children - ages girl age 7 and a boy age 5 - LOVE the sardine series. Sardine 1 starts as a more or less straightforward romp though space but as the series has progressed the characters have become more self aware and complex. I strongly recommend this book.
