Piratical guardian Captain Yellow Shoulder and kids Sardine and Little Louie are back for nine more sweetly silly adventures. This time, Guibert gives the nod to a variety of pop-culture icons, including the cell phone, moon pies, and Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series. The bouncy cartoons, wacky but well-plotted vignettes, and glowing color palette promise to reel in new readers and satisfy young fans. Reading Sardine is about as close as American kids can get to sharing the experience of their French counterparts, who have greater access to such age-appropriate comics. Guibert again provides a satisfying dose of that other world. Grades 3-5. --Francisca Goldsmith
