4.0 out of 5 stars Darkthrone don't disappoint
If you expect surprises with Darkthrone you are are mistaken. It's black metal no more no less. That is not to mean that it is one dimensional or boring.Nor is it trying desperately to fit any of the cliques that have appeared in black metal (progressive, pompous, "necro",etc).Darkthrone show that it is possible to take influence from any kind of music and still make...

3.0 out of 5 stars well, it's darkthrone
it's no big secret that somewhere in darkthrone's career they started putting out some pretty redundant albums, but this is at least a fun sort of redundant that suggests a sincere love for thrash metal and d-beat/crusk punk. it's notable for being the only recent darkthrone album to be derivative of the band's influences in attempt to create something new without the...

That is not to mean that it is one dimensional or boring.Nor is it trying desperately to fit any of the cliques that have appeared in black metal (progressive, pompous, "necro",etc).Darkthrone show that it is possible to take influence from any kind of music and still make quality music without sounding like those influences.
Perhaps the reviewer who gave this three stars expects too much from Darkthrone as we all do from the true quality bands. I always feel disappointed by new Slayer or Morbid Angel albums simply because they have produced such monumental music before-their average is another band's best album ever. And Fenriz's lyrics are brilliant-dark, metal but not overdramatic or dumb.Just quality.

it's no big secret that somewhere in darkthrone's career they started putting out some pretty redundant albums, but this is at least a fun sort of redundant that suggests a sincere love for thrash metal and d-beat/crusk punk. it's notable for being the only recent darkthrone album to be derivative of the band's influences in attempt to create something new without the slightest sense of of irony, rather than simply cannibalizing the past for the sake of it and adding joke lyrics. a bit monochromatic and certainly not a sjakk matt, but i like it; just listen to their essential releases first for context.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!, August 22, 2005

This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
This album is actually quite good!! No it's no Transilvanian Hunger (my favourite BM album of all time), but we don't get another one of those, ever. This album is raw, black and atmospheric. Just the way we like it! Amazing how a band can achieve so much with so little. It's so stripped down, and has a really good old-school feeling to it. 1st generation black metal and hardcore punk, but with atmosphere. They don't need the boring electronic intro though. This is the first "modern" (post 96) Darkthrone album that I really get into, and I am pleasantly surprised. I'm gonna buy it! Maybe even the t-shirt too! Darkthrone is by far the best black metal band ever. Yes their classic period is behind us, but if they keep on making records like this one, I'll stick around! If you like quality old-school black metal with a retro-feel, buy this baby.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's alright for later Darkthrone, June 9, 2005
This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
Pretty routine stuff now for Darkthrone. It's not bad, but far from good. Has some nice riffs, and fenriz is always good with his drumming.

Not as powerful a listen as their earlier albums. If you can find this used for $8 or below, i'd say go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, March 1, 2005
This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
The best rock'n roll album thus far this year! Only "Transylvanian hunger" is better in the Darkthrone catalogue I can allready tell, but that was stripped down empty-despair-black-metal, this is rock'n roll, type Dark-head/Motor-throne. Buy it!!!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
ok first off, the "Fred Dursts Biggest fan" guy shouldnt even deserve to listeon to music. To say that these guys pose to be METAL (not medal u dumbass)is crazy. This band was around long before Limp Bizkit and they are two totally differnet types of music. the things that guy types are so stupid "they should write songs about being mad at parents and lookin cool" that i actually think it was a joke. i hope to a mercyful god that he was joking, becuase if there is a mercyful god and he wasnt joking, he will smite this retarted dumbass now...(no offense to actually retarted people)

i just had to get that out. anyway, on to this latest Opus from black metal heros Darkthrone. this album is pretty great. the vocals stay true to the old school ways and i really love this band. anyway, later, DEATH TO PEACE

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkthrone returns!, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
Okay, first off, "Fred Durst's Numba One Fann" is a complete D**CHE BAG!!! That little f**ker should NOT be granted the right to listen to music!!! Read all of his reviews, he gives one star to the albums he likes, he calls Korn the GODS OF DEATH METAL, calls Limp Bizkit death metal, and says that 50 Cent is good (while he claims to be a METALHEAD)!!!!!!! That pure piece of s**t needs to rot in the blackest abyss of pain and torture of all of eternity!!!!!!! [...]Now as much as I want to slaughter 'Fred Durst's Numba One Fann", I'll get on to my review about Sardonic Wrath. First of all, its very good. It displays all the good black metal qualities, as well as returning to the "Under A Funeral Moon' style. Darkthrone got a little rusty on their last few albums, but this shows that they are still at it!

DEATH TO "FRED DURST'S NUMBA ONE FANN"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can't do a better follow-up than Sardonic Wrath...pure Darkthrone filth but still in the light of their creativity while being able to stay true to their selves...great rock based black metal...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best since Panzerfaust, April 25, 2005
By
Chet Fakir (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sardonic Wrath (Audio CD)
I don't know what it is but I keep comming back to this album. Its lo-fi or necro (as are all Darkthrone releases) but has a very real and powerfully visceral punch to it. Darkthrone have their sound down by now and most of the albums since Panzerfaust have followed the same formula. And this time the formula really works. Several of the songs are a wall of blast beat spiked harmonic power, others are comprised of pummeling, almost grooving Celtic Frost-like riffs. My only complaint is that the vocals are a bit low in the mix. But overall I find this to be a very satisfying album.
