Sargent's landscapes are the epitome of what I love in plein aire painting. His great ability to read values and harmonize his palette combined with his wonderful draftsmanship make his landscapes just perfect. This book sets the stage for his work--travels to exotic lands--and provides excellent context. My only complaint is that there were all too few color plates. What's the sense of digging into a subject that hasn't been covered all that much, and not give the reader more to savor.
