One of the Three Sarod Masters,
By Brandon McIntosh (Redmond, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sarod (Audio CD)
Buddhadev Das Gupta is always a sure bet. This album is just another example of his complete control over the sarod and the ragas. Buddhadev is quoted as being one of the top three sarodist alive today. His rhythmic accuracy and complexity is in my opinion unparalleled, even by Amjad Ali Khan. Buddhadev Das Gupta was an Engineer before he became a full-time sarodist; this maticulas attention to detail really comes through on this album.

Ryhthmically stunning!,

This cd will leave you breathless. The rhythmic interplay and intensity between Buddhadev Das Gupta and Samir Chatterjee (tabla) is astounding. On another cd I saw someone say that they didn't enjoy Buddhadev because he rushes things. That was about a cd that I haven't heard so it may be true on that cd but it isn't true for this one. The Alap, Jor & Ladant does indeed start slowly, with Buddhadev playing solo, effectively creating a relaxing mood that he and Samir will later shatter in the best possible way.Honestly, I'm not even sure what all I could possibly say about this cd. Usually after it ends I just have to sit there for a few minutes and try to generate a thought. Not an easy task after the mindblowing rhythmic marathon contained on the last half of this cd. These guys are truly 2 of the great musicians of our time and this is definitely one of the best Indian releases of the 1990s.
