3.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected kung fu romantic comedy
Having been to Bangkok and having some familiarity with Asian cinema, I was expecting a stomach-churning gore fest that might provide some nice shots of Bangkok to stir the ol' travel memories. I was not expecting a comedy with the occasional laugh-out-loud moment (I didn't really look at the cover before ordering). Sars Wars is a send-up of all sorts of movies from...

4.0 out of 5 stars Draw some scary teeth on your white doctor mask and get ready for some Sars Wars!, April 30, 2008
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
I really don't know how to put in words what I just saw. But I definitely will try!

One day I did a search on `Zombies' on Amazon. And this funny lookin movie pops up. It's called "Sars Wars" so yeah, I HAD to look at it. It's got zombies on the front and Asian dudes with lightsabres and a girl with an axe. I immediately added it to my wish list and about a month later, I just couldn't take it anymore and I had to buy it.

Now I'm no fool. I usually can tell if it's going to be a bad low budget movie or not before I even put it in the player, and I definitely thought this was going to be one, but I HAD to see it. In all honesty, it wasn't that bad at all. I actually laughed pretty hard at some scenes. The production value wasn't to bad either. Film quality wasn't that great, but not that bad either. You can tell it was filmed on a closed set. And the CG that was used was pretty bad, but not the worst I've seen. That's about it for the badness of this movie.

Now onto the good. The story is about a girl of some wealthy man being kidnapped and being held for ransom. If the bad guys don't get their money they are going to rape her with a cucumber dipped in raspberry sauce. Not only that, but the Sars virus has landed on Thailand, the only place that has been free of the virus. And this is Sars version 4. I'm not sure if you've heard of this one yet on CNN, but this is the version that turns humans into evil vampiric looking zombies. They didn't waste money on the zombie makeup, that's for sure. They looked REALLY good (even though they looked a lot like the vampires you'd see in Buffy or Angel). Have I caught your attention at all? Probably not. How about this then. When the kidnappers come to get the girl, they use a hot girl to distract the car carrying her. Then a guy in a big anime lookin bear suit walks out in front of the car. Car hits bear suit guy. Driver gets out and says, `OH NO I HIT A DOG!' (which I immediately started laughing cause he was serious...lol), and then the other guys says , "NO MAN YOU HIT A BEAR!", (lmao). Then a friggin ninja jumps out from a bush and does a pose where the sun is beaming off his sword and then all bad choreographed heck breaks lose. Still haven't gotten your attention? How about a guy trying to kill a bunch of zombies, and then does a John Woo/Chow Yun Fat jump (one of those sideways jumps) and blazing his guns, to only fall into the arms of about 10 zombies. Then he starts to get eaten and his boss tells him to try and only get eaten halfway so he can have sometime to escape! No not yet? How about a sex scene where the guy says he'll give her certain positions like the (I laughed hard at this) "Eat Rice Noodle" (or something like that). She giggles and says "OOOOOOO" as he flys in the air towards her. Noodles are flying everywhere while he's going down on her. Then he stands up and still has a noodle on his chest. I could not believe what I was seeing. It was to dang funny. There were way to many scenes that were funnier than they should've been I think. And one last thing, the gore was GREAT. Sometimes over the top, but it was meant to be.

Now not ALL the scenes are funny. Some are just to out there, and I wonder if it's just me being American that I didn't find all the stuff funny. But I honestly liked this film a lot for what it was. The movie DOES get somewhat bad in some parts, so please make sure you know that before you watch this.

Also there is no nudity because I'm guessing Thai censorship doesn't allow it. I found this out in the movie because they actually make a joke about it.

One other thing I have to say is you HAVE to watch the special features. One of the trailers, Dragon 20000 volts, or something like that, seemed cool. I need to find out more about this movie because it looked interesting. It's black and white, but if felt like a 'Sin City' black and white and it deals with humans and dragons being intertwined and their power being released when you are zapped with electricity. Looked cool. Also make sure you take a glimpse at the music videos. I seriously shook my head and started laughing cause they were so bad they were good (ok maybe not good... lol)

But the best thing about the special features was the Discotek (however you spell it) preview reel. The first minute or so was like a sleazy exploitation film with a naked Asian chick (yes you see a good amount of boobage) shooting people and all kinds of other stuff, while this sweet techno Disco Tech song was being played. And then they kept showing all kinds of other movies and anime. It was all mixed together like some dude just threw a bunch of clips together and he didn't care if they were good or bad or if they really showed you what the movie was about. It was BRILLIANT! I seriously want to see just about every film on that promo reel.

In the end I would say I had a good time with this movie and I was sober and watching it alone. I bet this movie would be an instant classic if you had some friends over and had a few (or a lot) of beers in ya.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly, gory, irreverent and absurd, November 11, 2006
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
SARS WARS is a wonderfully silly, gory, irreverent and absurd zombie comedy with pretty high production values by Thai standards. An outbreak of a mutant strain of the SARS virus turns the residents of a tower block into zombies, and a motley bunch of heroes end up fighting to survive. The film is relentlessly daft, spoofing numerous popular culture references (especially KILL BILL) and sending itself up with comments directly to (or about) the audience. The tone is cheerfully low brow - it's great to see foreign cinema get released in the US that doesn't pander to the "arthouse" crowd (and isn't a martial arts film) for a change. Discotek media deserve credit - and sales - for their bravery in putting it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wild, Gorey, Zombie Slapstick from Thai Monty Python, January 27, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
Completely Insane!!!
Funniest zombie comedy I've seen since "Return of the Living Dead: Part 2"
This movie was wildly hilarious!!!
It's so silly that it can't help but be hilarious.
And you'll see that right away.
From the gags to the costumes to the ADD pace.
It moves like a hyperactive, Speedy Gonzalez hopped up on rocket-fuel.
And that goes for the sub-titles as well.
They speed by, as the movie races along it's ridiulous path, often leaving some lines totally unreadable.

The gore is magnificent & plentiful.
Once it starts spraying it doesn't stop.
And the zombies look great too!!
The jokes are low-brow, ludicrous, & funny,
often poking fun at its influences, its audience, and itself.
After 2 viewings I gotta admit...
this movie is absurdly rewatchable,
just like Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail.
(Imagine that rabbit scene stretched over two hours.)
I couldn't stop laughing the entire movie,
it's still echoing in my chest.
It's stupid, it knows it stupid, and it loves what it is.
If you don't mind wildly ridiculous zombie comedies,
And you want to laugh until you hyperventilate,
This one is a madman. (but it's definitely not for everyone)
So put on your rain-coat and fasten your oxygen mask,
'Cause once the blood starts pouring, you're gonna choke on your own laughter.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
When a movie contains a light-saber battle with a giant zombie snake,
you know you're in for Bangkok Zombie Crisis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sars Wars is zombie comedy at its absolute best!, August 28, 2006
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
This is easily the funniest, most original film that I have seen in ages! I was lucky enough to catch a screening this gem at Fantasia Fest- the audience was going crazy and laughing their arses off! This is definitely a fun movie to watch with friends. From the light saber duel with the giant snake, the Kill Bill-esque anime sequences,to the zombie baby attack,it is non-stop action from start to finish! Even in it's sillier moments, it never fails to entertain- not to mention the girls are SO HOT! The US release is widescreen, and has a bunch of extras including deleted scenes and music videos. The packaging is top notch as well. You can't really tell on Amazon, but the DVD comes with a fantastic, shiny slip cover that looks great (and will undoubtedly have your friends begging to borrow). Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!!!!!!!!, July 23, 2006
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
Sars Wars. It even rhymes. Thailand's best movie ever. Sars has transformed everyone on the plant in a zombie. The earth's last chance of survival lies within a few teenagers and an old dude armed with a light-saber, very much like a jedi. There is comedy also. Think about this movie like a mix between star wars, night of the living dead, shaun of the dead, female yakuza, evil dead, demons and all that with manga written on top of it. A great movie to watch when u want to laugh and have a smokin' good time:)))

4.0 out of 5 stars The zombie pot calling the kettle black, June 20, 2010
By
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
Prepare to have your funny bone fractured. This maniacal 2004 zombie spoof from Thailand is infested with the most off-the-wall, deliriously contagious and absurd loony madness. I'm talking about wacky satire, funny homages, dumb pranks, and over-the-top silliness. But don't worry--there's more than enough juicy, blood-drenched mayhem to appease your gory, undead fetish as well. SARS WARS is some bloody good times.

Right on the cover we're given a hint of what kind of pranksters these filmmakers are. It says "ZOMBIES! GORE! NUDITY!". I guess nakedness is strictly forbidden in Thai films, so this might have sent the censors scrambling. Anyway, don't get your hopes up on the nudity bluff. Really nothing or nobody is safe from some friendly, good-natured ribbing here. They seem to be having a howling good time making fun of the industry, the viewers, and even themselves.

So what is this film really about you ask? Stupid question. Okay sorry, I don't mean to be rude. But yes, it is about a deadly SARS virus outbreak that originates in Africa and quickly spreads north and east, courtesy of some nasty mosquitoes. This disease turns many hapless souls into raving, flesh-craving vampire zombies with super human strength. Oh the horror! Thailand is so proud to be the lone, virus-free country in all of Asia. Better be careful what you brag about.

Then somewhere in Bangkok a mob boss's daughter gets kidnapped for ransom by some other "dangerous" thugs. Ever see a gangster wear a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt? So, a Rainbow warrior plus an old man (who harnesses a battery-operated lightsaber) is sent to the nightclub where the beautiful young woman is being held. Chaos ensues when the building is overrun by zombies, and the two forces must temporarily unite in order to survive.

Oh yes, let the bedlam commence. There's blood splatter, flesh rippage, severed limbs...all coupled by cartoonish sound effects that keeps everything light-hearted and fun. The pace here is frantic, it jumps from one cornball violent extreme to the next. Throw in the Jedi homages, the Matrix freeze frame shootout, a giant man-eating snake, plus a crazy zombie baby and what do you have?...(cricket, cricket)

One of the craziest and goofiest zombie films you'll ever see!

5.0 out of 5 stars Piece Of Cake, May 16, 2010

This is, hands down, one of the best - if not THE best - zombie comedies I've ever seen. There's a little bit of everything here: it comes off as much a parody of horror films in general as it does an entry into the zombie genre - there was even a little "It's Alive" thrown in. I recently watched a Hong Kong zombie comedy movie - "Biozombie"; and while "Biozombie" was also good, it strained a bit at being funny, whereas in "Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis" the comedy blended effortlessly into the total fabric of the project. And even though Biozombie had English translation throughout whereas Sars Wars only had English subtitles, "Sars Wars" was still a more enjoyable watch. Besides, in zombie movies, you more or less know what the characters are saying even without the subtitles. Plus, "Sars Wars" had a number of unexpected twists to counter the all-too-obvious plot line. And the main characters were not at all out-of-the-box zombie movie characters; they were actually quite unique. For instance, the kidnapped school girl - her kidnapping being the central plot device - almost kickboxed herself away from her kidnappers; it took all of them to subdue her. And the ringleader of the kidnappers - well, that's a story in itself. Or the ultra-sexy scientist, whose vaccines yield less than the hoped-for results. Or the Kung-Fu master, whose sacred sword turned out to be a little too modern for his own good. But the best character was, as expected, the action hero - who preferred taking the stairs because riding an elevator was neither cool nor wholesome; and who informed the drug-taking patrons of a nightclub that drugs were bad - which, of course, they took to mean really cool. This is a zany, fun to watch movie, with its share of scary moments. It does the zombie comedy genre proud.

If you're in the mood for a different kind of comedy, This is it. The story line stays consistant and moves along nicely. Its not a comedy for children, But an adult with a sense of humor will enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious offbeat zombie comedy from Thailand, August 16, 2008
This review is from: Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis (DVD)
I knew that Thailand was churning out some of the best horror films of the last few years, and now Khun krabii hiiroh, better known as SARS Wars (aka SARS Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis) gives me all the proof I need to declare that Thai cinema is easily the hottest thing around. I wouldn't call Bangkok the new Hollywood, but certainly there is a great deal to be excited about when you're talking about Thai cinema. Japan, South Korea, and even Bollywood had better keep an eye on their rear view mirrors. Maybe you're thinking that any movie from Thailand must be some kind of highly conservative, mind numbingly boring drama about rural life with computerized credits being the closest thing you get to special effects - if so, you couldn't be more wrong. SARS Wars delivers ample amounts of blood, a couple of bodacious babes, some pretty racy scenes, and one comic moment after another, going places that even Shaun of the Dead failed to trod in all its zombie comedy goodness (and don't go calling SARS Wars a Shaun rip-off, either, as both films were released in 2004).

The film starts off with a Thai Minister proudly declaring Thailand the only Asian country absolutely free of the SARS virus - bad mistake. Thanks to one little insect, a luxury hotel in the heart of town soon finds itself the center of an outbreak of SARS 4 virus. Unlike its cousins in the SARS family, SARS 4 isn't satisfied with merely killing people - it turns them into zombies after they're dead. Zombies are the last thing on pretty schoolgirl Liu's (Phintusuda Tunphairao) mind, as she finds herself held captive in one of those hotel rooms after having been kidnapped (in a wholly unique way, I must add). Her father has compelled Master Thep (Suthep Po-ngam) to help rescue her, and he has sent his top student Khun (Supakorn Kitsuwon) to do the job. By the time Khun arrives on the scene, the SARS 4 infection has already begun to run amuck throughout the building. To save his Lady, he'll have to battle her evil kidnappers as well as hordes of super-zombies (these things are a lot faster than your average Romero Shamblers) and get out of the guarded, quarantined structure before government forces blow it (and its SARS 4 victims) to kingdom come. His only allies are Master Thep and a really hot government scientist more than eager to test out her anti-virus on the infected. I would definitely want Dr. Diana (Lene Christensen) on my side in a zombie crisis. Heck, I'd gladly take a "Stop Virus Bullet" in the head, having seen the sexy way she has of helping a guy recover.

SARS Wars dares to answer questions that most zombie movies are afraid to ask. For instance, what if a giant snake became zombified? Better yet, what would happen if a very pregnant woman was turned into a zombie? Let's just say that you'd better be sure you have fresh new batteries for your Green Freeze Sword - and your remote control. And be prepared to hold on to your knickers (and your lunch) for one of the most shocking twists you've ever seen.

The only thing that flows more freely than blood in this film is the comedy. And, lest you think Thailand is just now emerging from some sort of cultural vacuum, I think you'll be amazed at all of the movie and pop culture references this film brings to bear. Yes, it has its stupid moments (including several references to the fact that it is a movie), and some of the CGI effects do not meet the highest of standards, but that's ok. Actually, something like a good and campy decapitation fits the bill quite nicely here, as anything too realistic wouldn't have been as funny - and make no mistake, funny is what SARS Wars is all about.
