Very enlightening documentary!, November 3, 1999
This review is from: Sartre By Himself [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a documentary which features Sartre, de Beuvoir and others in Sartre's appartment. The documentary traces Sartre's development from early childhood to his opposition to the war in Vietnam. Fascinating conversation, newsreels, and dramatic reenactments of S's works enliven this thorough film. Not worth the price (but what movie is?) Rent it from a local library intead of purchasing.

Its the only movie in English about Sartre, March 12, 2004
This review is from: Sartre By Himself [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the only movie to my knowledge which shows Sartre in all his fire and passion! An excellent film! A must have for the Die Hard Sartre fan! Sartre's Neurotic energy is abundantly manifest in this well directed documentary. It's a shame that the english going public does not have access to more of these films, and that these films are not more reasonably priced. Still, this film is excellent and a rare, rare, rare glimpse into the philosopher of existentialism!

Sartre with friends & their neuroses, June 2, 2005
This review is from: Sartre By Himself [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Can you believe it?: a two-cassette, 3-hour celebrity interview? Why not? In the days before compartmentalization & particularization & general pain-in-the-neckization, guys like Sartre were as prolific talkers as they were writers.
In 1972, Sartre sat in his apartment in the Montparnasse section of Paris for a film documentary: archive footage (including clips from the 1967 Vietnam War Crimes Tribunal, convened in London by Bertrand Russell; that's U.S. antiwar activist Dave Dellinger to Sartre's right)and Sartre being interviewed by old friends, including Simone de Beauvoir. A real historical find, particularly with the endless talking-head revisionism conducted nightly on CNN & its broadcast progeny.
Originally made for French TV, Sartre By Himself was released theatrically in 1976. There is a post-Sartre coda on the video. In French with English dubbing & French subtitles for the archive footage. The only real drawback is that everyone but Sartre seems uncomfortable on camera: the energy produced by the fidgeting here could heat homes in the Midwest for a whole winter.
