A Major Post-Impressionist,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saryan (Great Painters) (Hardcover)
Armenian Martiros Saryan is a major post-impressionist painter too little known in the U.S. This beautiful large format book brings his intense color portrayal of the south Caucasus and eastern Mediterranean to our shores. His paintings capture the heat and exotic street life, the stunning architecture and costumes, the bazaars, caravans of camels, nomads and the lonely shepherds in his homeland's mountains. Saryan fits comfortably alongside Matisse and Fauve painters who were his contemporaries at the dawn of the 20th century. In the 1930's he designed sets and costumes for operas. Later in his career his subjects were almost exclusively Armenian landscape, people and architecture--charming domestic courtyards & balconies as well as the stunning ancient stone churches.
