This field guide to the birds of Southern Africa incorporates many features to allow the reader to quickly and easily identify birds and find information about them. Each species account provides the bird's common name in English and Afrikaans, its scientific name, its Roberts number and its length. To help identify species, information is provided on plumage of the male, female and immature bird, typical behaviour, voice, habitat and nests and food. To make the information more accessible, entries are colour coded, reduced bird images make finding bird groups easier and a list of bird families in alphabetical order with their page references appears inside the front cover for quick reference. Recent discoveries and reclassifications are included and the text and maps have been updated.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Bird Guide book for Southern Africa, November 20, 2009

I travel to southern Africa at least once a year on safari. I have found the Sasol guide book to be my favorite, and I use it extensively -- and I also own Newman's and Roberts (both good choices), as well as three other bird guide books for the region. If you have a little bit of birding experience, then this is an excellent book to consider. I may be wrong, but from personal experience, most southern African birders use either a copy of the Sasol, Newmans or Roberts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with ease, June 27, 2009
My family and I purchased this book for a trip to South Africa and Zambia last summer. We found it invaluable. Every day, whether on safari, walking through town, or driving along the highway we needed it to identify the most wonderful species of birds. The illustrations and organization were helpful, along with the photo index inside the cover. Our Zulu tour guide on Safari had one as well and said it was the only serious one to use.
