Book Description

September 1, 2002
A guide to the birds of southern Africa, this title features an advanced technique for improved field identification, and an extensive taxonomy featuring corrected misidentifications and recorded species splits that have occured since the previous edition. Also updated from the second edition are names based on recommendations of the International Ornithological Committee and name hyphenations. The checklist, reading list, family summaries, cross-references to species accounts and societies and club details have also been updated since the last edition. The guide features distribution maps that feature dual shading to show relative abundance of a species in the region, as well as crosses to indicate occurances of vagrants. Many of the plates have been cleared of superfluous foliage detail and a feature of the illustrations is the insertion of labels indicating distinctive features for quick identification.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Bird Guide book for Southern Africa November 20, 2009
Format:Paperback
I travel to southern Africa at least once a year on safari. I have found the Sasol guide book to be my favorite, and I use it extensively -- and I also own Newman's and Roberts (both good choices), as well as three other bird guide books for the region. If you have a little bit of birding experience, then this is an excellent book to consider. I may be wrong, but from personal experience, most southern African birders use either a copy of the Sasol, Newmans or Roberts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version unfriendly January 17, 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Would never have purchased the kindle version if I knew it was so user unfriendly. Why are there no links from the bird name to the appropriate page? Even if you know exactly what you are looking for, it takes forever to find the information. It is day lite robbery to sell the kindle version, I'll stick to my printed version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with ease June 27, 2009
Format:Paperback
My family and I purchased this book for a trip to South Africa and Zambia last summer. We found it invaluable. Every day, whether on safari, walking through town, or driving along the highway we needed it to identify the most wonderful species of birds. The illustrations and organization were helpful, along with the photo index inside the cover. Our Zulu tour guide on Safari had one as well and said it was the only serious one to use. Unfortunately I've found it quite un-user friendly as a e-book. When you're looking for a bird in the index, it would have been nice to just click on the name and it takes you... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Much inferior to the iPhone app
I am very disappointed. I have the Sasol app for the iPhone. In addition to beautiful illustrations and loads of information, it is searchable and has 7-8 second bird calls. Read more

I find it difficult to find birds and then to tie the picture in with calls, areas and nesting habits.

Ended up taking lots of pictures of birds which I did't recognize. I purchased this book after my trip and was able to name most of them. There are few I couldn't locate.
