A Real Page Turner,
By
This review is from: Sassy (Paperback)
Myra Barrett lie dying--stabbed over and over by the man she was secretly dating and who she had fallen in love with. Her best friend, Carrie, lay dead nearby.
Why? Why was this happening? She had so much to live for--her career; her child. Thoughts raced through her head as life drained from her; her killer still standing over her helpless body. He would soon shower, and dress in fresh clothes, in her own apartment before attending another important date with someone very special. Four hours later, Sassy Davenport, a popular romance novelist, is having a book signing party. The line is long. This had been a good night for selling her latest novel. Norris Yoshito, is the next customer to ask for her autograph. As their eyes meet, they are instantly drawn to each other. He wants to meet her afterward, and a romantic relationship develops. As multiple murders unfold in this unforgettable novel, the reader is held spellbound from the opening paragraph. Will the murderer be caught before it's too late for Sassy? This is a thriller that I couldn't put down...I read it within 24 hours! For mystery lovers, this is a "must read."

Just Plain Awful,

I usually am never motivated to write a review, however this book was so horrible that I just can't be silent. There is so much wrong with this book for so many (14) to rate it so highly. I actually feel like I was conned. After reading the other reviews, I was expecting suspense, murder, and dash of romance. I got the murder part, I just didn't know the victim was the book.
The first thing that jumps out at you is the plot. It comes straight out of a soap opera; from the 1980s.You can actually guess who the killer is after about 75 pages or less; which isn't a challenge for an avid reader. Another problem is the terrible grammer. It's so bad that if a middle school student was to turn this in, they couldn't even hope to get a passing grade. I try not to fuss over a writer's "style" but this is too much. The errors are present from start to finish with misspelled words, words that just don't belong in the sentence (ex. "She was touch old woman" instead of tough and "rying" instead of trying), and just plain awkward phrases that no one uses regardless of class, geography, or social standing. You literally start to feel like someone is trying to hurt you using English. The author was in desperate need of a proofreader and an editor that will actually pay attention to the quality of work their attaching their name to. One other thing is that you can't get a feel for what the characters even look like until almost 100 pages into the book. This makes it hard to picture the story when you have only the vaguest idea of what the characters look like. Last but not least, the author ruins the characters. She takes the supportive and extremely forgiving best friend and does everything to try to get the reader to hate her just to make the lead character look more magnanimous when the BFF has every right to be angry and hurt. To make it worse, it's done in such an obvious turn on a dime way that it leaves you feeling frustrated and ready for the book to just end already. She then takes a perfect opportunity for the whole redemption and forgiveness cliche (which would have made this a 2 star book) and just utterly destroys it in a completely unrealistic mess that has you skimming the last chapters just to see if you correctly guessed who the killer was. After all that, the emotional fallout of who the killer is is left unexplored from the point of view of the person most affected by the entire situation. All in all, it hurt to read it, I'm amazed I finished it, and I absolutely paid too much. Definitely a must miss.

Needs better title,

This review is from: Sassy (Paperback)
This book starts out with a terrifying moment of a woman getting stabbed by a cold blooded mad man named Norris. The suspense continues to build when we see Norris with a completely different personality. Is he mad or isn't he? Sassy thinks he is the one, but events start to happen which cause her to doubt herself. Sassy has enough on her plate trying to write her next novel and dealing with her brother's illness, but Norris seems so caring and genuine...
You will be hooked from the first terrifying chapter to the final confrontation. I loved the characters and the plot, but I thought the author could have come up with a more catchy name. I don't feel it was about Sassy in its entirety. Thank you to Ms. Mallette and her publicist for sharing her book with me to review.

A Surprising Mystery Thriller!,
This review is from: Sassy (Paperback)
Sassy Davenport is a romance novelist that has a legion of devoted fans. She can write perfect "happily ever after" endings but she still seeks true love in her own life. Successful architect Norris Yoshito walks into one of Sassy's book signings and he is enthralled by her. Sassy and Norris soon enter a satisfying relationship. Things take a disturbing turn for the worse when a string of murders lead directly to Norris. Is Norris really the man of Sassy's dreams or is he really a cold and calculated murderer?
Sassy is a riveting novel by Gloria Mallette. Mallette once again brought her innovative storytelling skills with this book. The character development was one of the things that made this a standout novel. You get to see Sassy as not only a successful novelist but as a compassionate woman when she deals with her cousin that's dying of AIDS. As you get further into this story, you'll keep wondering if Norris is really this Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde character that he is purported to be. This story shaped up to be a surprising mystery thriller that will have you at the edge of your seat until the last page. No Gloria Mallette novel would be complete without one of her jaw-dropping twists that will surely delight readers. Sassy is a fast-paced and intriguing novel that is another first class winner for Gloria Mallette. Reviewed by Radiah Hubbert for Urban Reviews

The Life I Write About,
By Loretta "MsLo" (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sassy (Paperback)
Renowned Romance author Sassy Davenport wrote for the enjoyment of other women; she never believed her own hype. At a book signing, a very masculine Norris Yoshito asks for her autograph, their eyes meet, and they are instantly drawn to each other. Norris is the image of the hero in her latest novel, down to his beautiful eyes and sexy smiles. It's as if he stepped from the pages and into her life. But Sassy if afraid to live the life she writes about. Although Norris appears to be the man of her dreams, her skepticism makes her wonder if evil lies behind those beautiful eyes and that senuous smile? Adding to Sassy's problems is her love for her favorite cousin and best friend, Bernard, who is dying of AIDS. A girl friend who is not who Sassy thought she was. Bernard's son who does not know his father is dying. And Sassy's own morbid belief in 'happily ever after'. A cautious Sassy agrees to date Norris, and a romantic relationship develops. But, things take a disturbing turn when a string of murders lead to Norris. Sassy knows the Norris she loves is kind and caring, but, now more than ever she wonders if Norris is really the man of her dreams? Bernard pleads for Sassy and Norris to marry before he dies even though he knows Sassy thinks marriage could be a horrible mistake that might lead to her own death. SASSY is a riveting psychological drama which will have readers questioning the Jekyll/Hyde personality of Norris. As Norris' life unfolds readers will wonder if he is, a persuasive con man, a clever killer, or a victim of a split personality, because the other Norris is violent and deadly. Ms. Mallette who never writes the same story twice, shows her skills as she develops strong, demanding characters and a storyline that transforms into a spell-binding mystery without missing a beat. The ending has a surprising twist as is typical of Mallette's products. Readers will not be disappointed.

Two faced may not be a strong enough term for some people. "Sassy" is the story of one Sassy Davenport, the woman who may have just met the man of her dreams. But when Norris, the man she has become smitten with, has some of his coworkers turn up dead, Sassy suddenly isn't so sure of Norris, thinking he may not be as genuine as she thinks. "Sassy" is a fine combination of romance and mystery, sure to entertain and delight many general fiction readers.
