A sign of things to come..., January 31, 2008
This review is from: Satanic Blood (Audio CD)
Before Burzum, Darkthrone, and Immortal became the leaders of Black Metal, VON created an album that would influence the above bands and truly kickstart the Black Metal movement to come.
At around the same time that Sarcofago (which also influenced the Norwegian bands) released INRI, VON created Satanic Blood, that while it wasn't officially released, went through the bootleg circulation and eventually spread enough to reach all others in the underground.
The music is simple, relatively fast, but more importantly, quite dark. The riffs are straightforward, the drums kept at a steady rock beat, with the occasional fill, and the bass sometimes audible and normally following the guitar, making it as simple as the riffs.
There are two things that really stand out for me regarding this album. One, the riffs while simple, manage to hit that dark, melancholic, hypnotic groove, that later bands such as Darkthrone, would expand upon with their seminal, "Transilvanian Hunger". Another thing was the vocals, which sound like a conglomeration of the death metal low grunt-type vocals, and the Black Metal higher-pitched vocals that would have been found on the INRI album by Sarcofago.
The song that manages to perfectly express the above is the last song, VON. The main riff of the song with the constant grunting of the vocalist, strips the music to it's barest bones, and you are left with the purest emotion of instinctual hatred and sadness. The unchanging melody provides the listenter enough time to become enwrapped with the pattern.
Varg Vikernes of Burzum would later express his favorable views of this album, and then everyone else in the Metal world would become aware of this album. But I think it's important to remember the recording date of this, in context with the other releases of the Norwegian bands, and to realize that this was revolutionary for it's time. It was Darkthrone before Darkthrone arrived.
This is an album of historical, and musical importance.

Don't buy this., July 20, 2006
This review is from: Satanic Blood (Audio CD)
This cd was put out by Hammerheart (now Karmageddon Media) and is a bootleg which means it should never be supported. A big label like Hammerheart shouldn't do this. Metal fans need to wake up and stop buying bootlegs. It's the worst kind of rip off thievry stealing someone's music and making money on it. Boycott Karmageddon Media thieves!!!
