4.0 out of 5 stars Satan in Southern Cal., March 23, 2011

This review is from: Satan's Princess [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Journeyman actor Robert Forster made his living doing serviceable films like this in the late 80s. Here he plays former cop Lou Cherney, a man of integrity despite a bum leg, bottle troubles, and an ex-wife who is not sympathetic to their developmentally disabled son. Cherney's search for a missing young woman ends up exposing him to the dangers of a deadly group of Satanists led by the seductive Nicole St. James played by Lydie Denier. What could have been a fairly boring by-the-numbers horror/So. Cal. noir film is saved mainly by Forster's acting. He is affecting both in his play with his disabled son, and his tenacious loyalty to his former workmates. When former partner Sal is killed while on the trail of the missing young woman, Lou joins the hunt in earnest. (The death of Sal features some nearly unbearable tension. ) Ms. Denier's physical beauty is certainly on display and there is some of the obligatory lesbianism that used to be part of the Hammer type female vampire films. I'm not certain of the identity of the character actor with the long hair, but he sure is creepy here as one of Satan's minions. I found this a worthwhile film that is neither campy, nor too full of holes in terms of character or plot.
