The hinges are firm and confident to move and stay tight when you want them to.

It can sit in either portrait or landscape just fine on the stand and the viewing angle and height is adjustable.

I have an iPad 2 with the Apple Smart Cover for the front and the Belkin iPad 2 protector for the back. What I love about this stand is that you don't have to take either of the covers off. It can sit in either portrait or landscape just fine on the stand and the viewing angle and height is adjustable. It's all aluminum so it has a nice solid construction feel too it and it won't scratch your iPad or the case.

The only minor down side is since the iPad is basically suspended in the air; if you tap on the screen it will shake the stand a little--as to be expected...gravity plays its part. Other than that, this stand works perfectly as advertised. I wish it was a little cheaper though.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for an iPad 2 stand that works in portrait and landscape and you don't want to have to take the front or back protectors on and off then this stand is for you!

The product is great looking and allows one to easily adjust the ipad viewing angle. The one major problem with the the Satechi Holder stand is that it vibrates or shakes everytime you touch the ipad screen! I find this distracting and a significant dissapointment in the product design.

Satechi R1 Arm Hinge Holder Stand for iPad - and more. I had been looking for a stand I could use for my Lenovo K1 but could not find anything. It got to the point where I was considering making one - in no way would that have been a good idea. I saw the R1 mentioned on a tech blog and the review was favorable. The only downside to the review was where the author said it was a little pricey Coming from the school of "you get what you pay for," I decided to look into the product. From the start I have been very impressed with the team at Satechi. I emailed a question about the possibility of using the stand for a tablet not mentioned in the product description. My tablet is (was) impossible to fit in any stand. To use the tablet in landscape mode the cradle opening must be wide enough to fit the stupid proprietary charging/power cord. I sent my question, they replied in a matter of hours, and I purchased the R1.

You can now add the Lenovo K1 tablet to the list of tablets that fit the R1. Finally I can hold a coffee in one hand and still use my tab in landscape mode all with the charging plugged into the K1. The R1 is a very sturdy holder and I have no qualms about using my tablet with it - the way I like it. I imagine the R1 will far outlast my tablet, but that's another story. Would I buy it again, even if I am one of the 99%? In a heartbeat. Great product, great support. That's what the free market is all about

You guys did a great job. Thank you.

I love well designed products. Don't we all? So when I went in search of the perfect stand to compliment the design of my iPad, I saw the Satechi R1 and couldn't resist. I watched the video review posted here and read all the user comments. All very favorable.

I must say, when it arrived I was quite impressed. My iPad is in a leather folio, so I was concerned whether it would be too wide to fit. The width of the tray was indeed a little too narrow to accept the iPad, but because of a ridge on the folio, it worked just fine and held the iPad securely. I was pleased. It looked good!

On the third day however after returning to my desk, I found my iPad face down on the floor with a broken screen. My heart sank. It seems the friction setting on the hinges is very critical. Perhaps with my leather cover on the iPad, it was just a little too heavy and the hinge couldn't hold it at the proper angle. As a result, it rolled over and poof...there went my iPad. The top hinge just gave way.

If you want to spend $40+ bucks for a fancy iPhone holder, you'll probably be fine. But if you put anything heavier on it, you're asking for trouble. This little device will quite possibly cost you a lot more than the sticker price. Mine goes back to Amazon in the morning.

The r1 stand is well built, sturdy yet of moderate size. The included carrying pouch is a nice added touch. I like the stand because it has protective rubber linings at all the contact points for the iPad. There are so many comfortable positions for typing landscape or portrait mode. In a folded position the iPad is close to the table surface for typing at a desk, the stand can be raised so the iPad can be held up for movie viewing or photo slide shows.

I use a Bear Motion leather iPad case (which I love) which I DO NOT have to remove when using the stand, Great convenience !

This stand is versatile because other electronics can be used as well. The iPhone fits nicely. It can held high for more comfort.

I also used my 13" laptop in it but the joints were not strong enough to hold the laptop up high. It worked well when the stand was closed. The laptop was kept at a comfortable angle for use at a desk.

My only concern is the strength of the joints. They are very tight now. They easily hold up the iPad without moving. Over time they may weaken and I don't see an easy way to tighten them if needed. Hopefully that will be a long way off. Build quality is very good. The finish is a satin smooth finish - very even and clean.
I would definitely recommend this stand for it's versatility, size and multiple positions.
