...so awesome I wish I would have purchased the paper copy instead of the digital. If you could give a s*** about Archaeology then this book is not for you. However, if Archaeology and new groundbreaking technology is an interest, then this is a fascinating book. I first became aware of this topic while watching a show on the Discovery channel that followed Dr, Parcak and her quest to get a possible pyramid excavated, using the data she gathered from satellite remote sensing, which allows one to "see" beneath the surface. This was one of the most exciting shows I had watched regarding archeological finds, in years and Dr Parcak's enthusiasm is contagious, which carries over into her book. She also addresses ethics and if one looks beyond the specific subject matter, the book is also a guideline on how to be successful in any profession. I can only hope there are more specials and books to come :)

The book starts with a review of remote sensing history, then examples of what you're looking for in imagery. There are great comparison charts of what each satellite provides in imagery, costs, a site checklist, how to establish signatures and also some interesting examples of ethics in the field. I donated the book to a local college that does a lot of archaeology and has a good remote sensing class. I only wish that the imagery had been in color and of a little better resolution, but not really necessary for the information she is imparting.

This is the first book dedicated to the use of satellite-based remote sensing techniques in archaeological research. Targeted at the archaeological audience, the book contains many examples of different RS methods, applied in locations around the world, including Egypt (the author's area of expertise), China, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Syria. An extensive bibliography accompanies this richly-referenced handbook.

Parcak begins with a history of remote sensing in archaeology, starting with pre-satellite aerial photography, and moving quickly to the most recent advances. She continues with an overview of different kinds of remote sensing imagery, what it can be used for, and where it has been used in archaeology. This section of the book is quite helpful to the non-RS archaeologist, who can be confused by the multitude of remote sensing platforms and products. Parcak pay particular attention to what kinds of RS products can be applied to different archaeological problems. Following this introduction to image types, Parcak briefly describes different processing methods and image analysis techniques. An introductory handbook is not the appropriate place to get bogged down in the details--indeed, it would be almost impossible to get into the technical weeds without a thorough knowledge of physics, calculus and geology, which is rare among archaeologists. Throughout, Parcak keeps the discussion accessible to the non-specialist, but provides references to more detailed publications.

The second half of the book is devoted to the use of remote sensing techniques in archaeological fieldwork, including discussions of what archaeologists can hope to see in RS imagery, what needs to be done in terms of ground-truthing, and other, practical matters.

Enjoyed her matter of fact way of writing. Very informative compilation of the art of remote sensing. I think she is doing a wonderful scientifically proper approach to her efforts in her field and expressed it very well in this book.
