5.0 out of 5 stars avail always rocks., July 8, 2004
By
This review is from: Satiate (Audio CD)
i dont know where to start with avail.
i cant believe no one has reviewed this album!
this was one of the first avail albums i heard.
it still remains, as most of their other records do, one of the best. it has two of their best songs, "mr morgan" and "connection"
it has all the energy of their other albums and is the blue print for what avail is. alot of people call them hardcore, and alot of hardcore kids love avail. i was a hardcore kid who loved avail. but they are much more than any hardcore band. it is mainly really amped up rock and roll, even southern tinged rock and roll, but definitely punk music. the songs are like anthems and you can sing along to so many of the choruses, which makes their live shows SO much fun. they are one of the best live bands consistently now for years. the anthemic quality and "sing-along value" of the songs make it fun for hardcore kids to get into. but they have a huge crusty punk following and tons of other people just cant help but love the catchy rock hooks, the amped up speed and the awesome sing along lyrics. tim always has good things to say, and the band always rocks even if they want to slow it down just to build it back up again. they have an groovin rhythmic punch that is guaranteed to make you move, even if its just bopping your head. you cant miss with these guys. more of you fans should check out this album. and you should definitely see them live. nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Avail Record, June 29, 2011
This review is from: Satiate (Audio CD)
This is one of Avail's older albums.

the first album i had ever heard was Dixie and i fell in love immediately. i quickly purchased 4am friday followed by Over the James and then Satiate.

each album is down right amazing in it's own right, though what sold me on Satiate was when i heard connection.

14 years later this is one of my most frequently listened to records. i can never get tired of it.

5/5 - a diamond in the rough

4.0 out of 5 stars More punk than hardcore, January 28, 2012
This review is from: Satiate (Audio CD)
1992's Satiate was the debut album from Richmond, VA institution Avail. I've never really been a hardcore guy, but as soon as I heard Avail's Over the James I became an instant fan of this band. I love their melodic approach to hardcore and their similarity to bands like Bad Religion and Social Distortion. You don't hear a lot of that on Satiate though. Sure, it's a melodic album, but it seems (to me at least) to lean heavily towards the early `90s punk rock sound. Not pop-punk, but it definitely fit Lookout's reputation more than say Revelation Records. It's got a great energy though, and you can pick up hints of what was to come on later albums.

I still don't think Satiate is anywhere near as good as the Avail albums that came after it, but it's still a very solid first effort, and one I continue to dust off from time to time (I'm spinning it right now). If nothing else, it's cool to revisit the band's early sound and see how far they came in the ten years that followed.
