I truly enjoy this music.
P. S.
Have to agree with Sussex Pond Pudding: Roge is the best; I fell in love with this CD 20+ years ago, and it's still with me.

If you like them, come pick up the rest of the album or at least the Gnossienne series.

I will not beat around the bush here: Pascal Roge is the world's best Satie interpreter. No one else comes close. I have no idea why Ciccolini is so often recommended as essential Satie. Next to Roge he is laughable and clueless. Buy all of Roge's Satie. In fact buy all of Roge's everybody. If you absolutely need only one Satie recording (a greatest hits one might say, even if one doesn't want to say it) this is it. Period. Full stop. Add it to your cart.

This is a varied and at times peaceful album, performed with exquisite taste. You probably know the Gymnopedies pieces found here. Try the samples, and you may well find you recognize them. Much of the rest of album is equally beautiful, though a few of the pieces, such as Je te veux, are on the light side, and others get rather strident. I suppose some of this was new age music created before there was new age music. The playing is nonetheless very sensitive and deeply soulful. Some of the melodies found here, particularly the Gymnopedies and Gnossienne, are deep and sad and full of emotion.

Bringing up new age music is perhaps a bit misleading as there is a modern, even avant-garde flavor to a few of these pieces. Nevertheless the prevailing mood of the album is quiet and meditative, even if there are a few outbursts of discord or boldly sounded chords in several places. If you don't have them, I would recommend the first three tracks. If you like them, come pick up the rest of the album or at least the Gnossienne series.

Have to agree with Sussex Pond Pudding: Roge is the best; I fell in love with this CD 20+ years ago, and it's still with me. Lyrical, poignant, droll -- it captures Satie beautifully.

I first heard this recording in 1985 and it has been part of my collection ever since. Never bettered its peaceful, yet masterful playing and interpretation display Satie at his very best. Roge is a wonderful pianist. I recall my original copy being damaged and I looked at other interpretations but in each case I was left wanting !!! Roge simply has no peer.

About the best you'll find. Plus, Roge includes a couple of Satie's delightful music-hall songs I like a lot and which the composer transcribed for piano: "Je te Veux" ("I Want You") and "Le Picadilly."

I love Satie -- especially when I need to calm down without becoming numb. He's light, funny, and amazingly soothing.

I play this when i want to relax and think quiet thoughts. Only Myra Hess's playing serves the same purpose.

Billed as a performer who "owns Satie", I found it good, but somehow I wasn't touched as deeply as I wanted to be, but then I am older then when I first heard Satie. It is great to have one CD that has only Satie-- there are plenty of Satie performances mixed into other pianists collections, but this CD covers a good range of the composers work. Recommended as a buy.
