5.0 out of 5 stars The best and beautiful, January 9, 2006
This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
Because of the subtle and pearly touch to the piano playing, this CD is the finest recording that I've heard of these Satie pieces (and I've heard various versions of these pieces recorded by other pianists who mess up the rhythm and expression of the pieces). At first what pulled me in was the album cover, when I was at a music store, but I was never the same after hearing this music that takes you to somewhere distant and beautiful- it blew me away! I took to learning how to play some of these pieces on piano, the Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes are not too hard to learn. This CD also turned my mother on to classical music, and she didn't even like this kind of music before. If Amazon doesn't carry it in stock, you can buy it off iclassics.com

This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
...truly amazing and soothing music. You don't necessarily need to be a huge classical music person to enjoy this. It is music to float on and to reflect on. The Sony Classics collection has allowed us to have these great recordings at such a great price that it would be such a waste not to take advantage of them. Also get the Sony Classics Strauss Waltzes.

5.0 out of 5 stars so beautiful it makes me weep, December 1, 1999
This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
I don't regularly listen to classical or piano music, but since I discovered this CD, I can't stop listening to it! The 'Gymnopedie's and the 'Gnossienne's are so hauntingly beautiful, they make my heart ache. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Overhelming Gymnopedies!, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
I could state Daniel Varsano was born to play Satie and make of this sidereal contribution one of the multiple objectives of his persoanl bliss.

I must recognize this notable distinction, because there just a few pianists who have been able to play Satie with such flair, incorporean elusiveness and aristocratic refinement as Varsano does.

If you are looking for the essential facets of Satie in those minimalist pieces, don' t doubt for a second and try to acquire this outstanding and original performances; a true musical feat which seems to improve and enhance through the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music and interpretation, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
Satie's music is both modern and melodic. If we had more composer like this, nobody would be talking about the decline of classical music. Entremont and Versano find the true French mood in this music. Their interpretation has a ligthness of touch and subtlety, and it conveys well the modernity, and at times the melancholy of Satie's music. A great bargain of a disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars . i tend to sound like a french expressionist, vaguely., December 11, 2001

I haven't listened to all recordings Satie, as the object of such a thing is limited, eventually, but I will say this is the best recording you can buy for Satie piano works.

The thing is, you can feel like an abstract withering ghost, quite a little poetic soul if you will, and then like a Magritte painting, a faceless, robotic, yet ironic man in a business suit.

Oh, you know, everyone's misuses 'impressionist' versus 'expressionist'. But this makes me feel like tiny things are beautiful, that there's humor in the industrial world, and that you can go slightly psycho, and that will be truer to your nature than your usual self.

5.0 out of 5 stars New to Satie, Ravel, Debussy, etc., this cd was the best!, February 3, 1999

This review is from: Satie: Piano Works (Audio CD)
I recently discovered Eric Satie in a History of Modern Art course at university. It is my opinion that this cd was a great introduction to a marvelous French composer. Unfortunatly, I have misplaced my original and now find myself at Amazon desperatly searching for a replacement. Wonderful music for inspirational painting!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool, April 10, 2011

If you're looking at this item you probably already know what these songs sound like so the choice is about the interpretation. And it's funny how different people will play things like this and how little variations here and there can make a difference. Maybe it's because this was my first introduction to Satie but now that I've listened to other versions these really sound the best. The sound quality and interpretation are superb.

If you are not familiar with Satie and have never heard these tunes then you are in for a treat. First, upon playing the first song on the CD you're going to say "Ah, I've heard that before!" I did. This is all very relaxing music that I really like. Next I'm going to get a songbook and try to play some of them myself. I highly recommend them.

The 2009 film "Bright Star", telling the brief, chaste love affair between John Keats and Fanny Brawne, contains lovely musical moments. We were especially taken by the piano composition Gnossiennes number 3 by Erik Satie. His work is hauntingly beautiful, and wonderful to listen to, whether actively listening to the music or at bedtime, when it engages and quiets the brain.
