Must-hear Satie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Satie: Piano Works, Vol. 4 (Audio CD)
If you thought Satie could not be dark and brooding, "Trois Pieces en Forme de Poire" should dispel that misconception. Satie's work has been compared to a keyhole; small, but a large view opens up when one puts one's eye up close to it. For "Trois Pieces," the keyhole is large indeed. The playing on this and the other tracks is superb. At this price, the disk is hard to pass up, and if anything is a great collection of this composer's relatively small output for piano four-hands.

Klara Kormendi's exquisite playing brings this music to life. Satie is more often than not lyrical and forward looking. There are a few moments were he is silly beyond belief. There is the ridiculously childish, "He ate my bread and butter." "Gargantua's Games" is absolutely bizarre. Satie's cafe music is what it is. But there are real gems here, notably, "Heures seculaires et instantanees" and "Trois morceaux en forme de poire."
