I've been using Satin Ice for a year now on my cakes. I purchase it from local bakery supplies stores as well as online. It is nice and smooth, soft and pliable. It doesn't require much kneading and tastes like vanilla, a bit on the sweet side though. If old (over a year), it will taste rancid and be a bit hard but can still be rolled out. Wilton brand rolled fondant is gross tasting and not as soft and pliable. Marshmellow fondant is more pasty tasting and gummier.

Satin Ice is the best tasting fondant I can find on the market. It's a little more sticky than other types of fondant but you can keep it from sticking to your hands by rubbing some crisco on your hands before working with the fondant.

Actually found out later that I can purchase this cheaper at Hobby Lobby by using their 40% off coupon. I did not notice that this cannot be returned to Amazon because it is a food item, even though I did not break the seal on it. But as always, Satin Ice has excellent fondant!

As a cake baker and decorator for over two years, I find this to be the best tasting fondant in my opinion. I never did like the taste of fondant but a year ago I started using Wilton's fondant and found that it doesn't taste bad. Here are the noticeable differences (good and bad) between Satin Ice and Wilton. The good:
Satin Ice taste better than Wilton and it's not overly sweet. It's more pliable. The amount of kneading time is considerably less. It takes color really quick and evenly with the smallest anount being used. Most of my customers who claim to not like fondant will eat Satin Ice.

Wilton: It's thick and covers better than Satin Ice. The taste is tolerable. Cheaper than Satin Ice.

The bad: Satin Ice is kinda thin. It feels tacky when placed on cakes but will dry in a few minutes. It's more expensive than Wilton.

Wilton: Takes a lot of coloring to achieve desired result. Drys out quickly. Many will not eat it.

All in all you have to decide for yourself. You are the one using it. My success may not be your success and my failure may not be your failure. Good luck.

I have been using Satin Ice for many years, but lately, the quality has diminished. Cracks appear almost immediately. There is little to do but to start over and pray. That is unacceptable. I will be researching alternatives for my business. [...]

This arrived in two days, so I have to give kudos for that! Luckily it arrived in time for my cake needs.

It was easy to color with gel paste, and easy to blend. I was afraid of streaks but it worked well. It rolled out easily on my mat, but be warned you really need to sprinkle on the powdered sugar before you try to roll it onto your roller to put it on the cake. If you are used to fondant that doesn't stick to itself very much, trust me on this. I had to re-roll it. Overall it went onto my cake smoothly, but it split in a couple of places and the repair job was NOT easy. (It was still obvious) By the time I put the fondant onto my cake and trimmed the excess (nevermind started to do the crack repairs) the remainder was already dry and cracking. It didn't keep moisture very long so keep that in mind also. my leftovers will have to be sculptural items and not re-rolled onto a cake.

It smells like cheap marshamallows but I have to agree with someone else that said it tastes better than Wilton; Wilton tastes like ground up mummified mice to me, just old and dusty and dirty. This isn't as delicious as homemade fondant, but I've had much worse than the Satin Ice.

I may get three cakes out of this bucket. To me that's not economical enough to buy it again, I'll make my own from now on. It more or less served a purpose for a cake I was making, but it's not a repurchase for me.

I've been using fondant on cakes for years. This is by far the worst fondant I have ever used. It cracks almost immediately. It doesn't matter how little or how much it's been worked, how thick or thin it's rolled, whether it rests in the refrigerator overnight after mixing the color or using immediately, whether using white or mixing colors, the fondant cracks. I was given a 5 pound bucket as a thank you after doing a cake for a friend and I will never use this brand of fondant again. I will go back to my go-to Wilton fondant that has never steered me wrong.

I have made my own fondant, both from scratch and several recipes using marshmallows. I have tried other brands with varying results. I am a professional cake decorator, I know what I am doing. But I can NEVER get homemade as smooth as workable as this fondant! And the only other pre-made I would approve of is Fondarific. I chose Satin Ice because I like the taste a bit better. It is delicious! My customers actually eat this fondant instead of peeling it off.
I do not cover entire cakes with fondant, I only use it for decoration and accents. I can see it getting pretty pricey pretty quick if you use a lot. The 5 lb tub would cover maybe four or five 8" round cakes.
This holds color very, very well without needing a ton of gel color. But I would recommend, if you need a royal blue, red, black, etc., just get the pre-colored tub. Save yourself the aching arm muscles and the color in your cuticles!
