Editorial Reviews

It's hard to believe there was ever a time when Justine Bateman was a bigger star than Julia Roberts, but Satisfaction is the evidence of that brief moment. It's also a movie unjustly maligned, perhaps because it's a little more frank about the sexuality of young women than older male movie critics find comfortable. Jennie Lee (Bateman, Family Ties) and her band (Roberts, soon to become one of the biggest movies stars in the world; Trini Alvarado, Little Women; Britta Phillips, later to be the bassist for the rock band Luna; and Scott Coffey, the only actor to appear in both Ferris Bueller's Day Off and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive) go to a beach town where they get a gig playing in a club run by a former songwriter (Liam Neeson, Schindler's List). Over the course of a summer, they fall in love, have sex, and play rock and roll--but the tone and texture of the movie is more American Graffiti than Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Perhaps because Satisfaction was directed by a woman, the girls are startlingly well drawn and distinct, despite the movie's episodic nature. Surprisingly, the music has some grit to it, perhaps because it was produced by the legendary Steve Cropper (of Booker T. and the MGs). Even more surprising, Roberts doesn't pop out as a future star; watching Satisfaction, you could imagine that anyone in this strong ensemble--even Justine Bateman--could go on to great things (if anyone stands out, it's Britta Phillips, who then dropped out of movies altogether). Satisfaction is not profound, but it is more honest and nonjudgmental about the messiness of life, youth, and love than the overwhelming majority of teen movies. Debbie Harry has a brief but memorable cameo. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars The rock band dream... 80's girl style, January 11, 2006

Satisfaction... is it goofy? Yes. Dated? Definitely 80's. Light/Fluffy? Yes. Bad acting? I bet Julia Roberts would pay to have her scenes erased forever. All of these questions miss the point however!! The appropriate question about this movie should be, "Is it FUN?", and the answer is "Oh yeah!".

Like day time talk shows, comic books, and that old Poison album hiding in the back of your closet, this movie is a guilty pleasure to be enjoyed, but never admitted to! If you are in, or just really like rock bands, this movie is even better (almost inspirational). It's a fun romp with a young (mosly girl) band who land the ultimate gig at a summer beach resort. Music, mayhem, and rock band movie cliches ensue. The humor is funny.... the "drama" is even funnier (the lead guitarist breaks her drug addiction in one day, because the band tells her to!)! Be sure to look for Debbie Harry (Blondie), who turns in the movie's best acting performance in a five minute cameo. The soundtrack is strangely good (retro 80's), and the "band" in the movie actually performs on it! See the movie, and you will have no doubt that Justine Bateman sang her own vocals... which may or may not be a good thing!

If you've ever strummed an electric guitar, or just dreamed of rocking out and hitting the road with your friends, you must see this movie!!

What a cast of actors--Justine Bateman, Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts. The music is perfect and the story is pure fun. This movie was an unexpected pleasure and well worth watching more than once!

4.0 out of 5 stars Historic first performances lead to greatness, September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Satisfaction [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It is just an OK film until you realize that Liam Neeson (Michael Collins & Star Wars) and Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman) were engaged to be married during the making of this film, Britta Phillips was cartoon vocals for JEM and Justine Bateman was starting fresh from Family Ties. Filmed in Charleston, SC, it is full of great backdrops. The acting is weak at times and the story is predictable. Trini Alvarado gives a believable performance. Still, it is fun to watch how these actors have grown. Lots of fun for a Saturday afternoon viewing and a must for true fans of Julia Roberts.
