I stumbled across Keahiwai in one of my random web ramblings - and what lovely discovery. I thought their debut album 'Local girls' was great and would happily have given it 5 stars. Then I listened to 'Satisfied,' their follow-up release - and it's even better. The arrangements are more polished and smooth, and with greater depth (I guess the sales from the debut album won them a bigger budget). The music is delightful: simple folky singer/songwriter and mostly with a light reggae/calypso beat, giving it all an airy, summery feel. The songs are what you'd expect from a couple of very young women: the yearning for love and the inevitable sadnesses of the search: simple and heartfelt. Nothing wrong with that: makes a change from jaded struggles with drugs and booze.


Very few albums grab me enough to listen through in their entirety. But there actually isn't a poor track on this album - and it's rare for me to think that. The highlight for me is "Time we spent together" - a sad, reflective song with a perfectly minimal arrangment of guitar and soprano sax (I think!) Very classy and moving.

Try to find a copy of this album. If you can't buy it for yourself, buy it to woo your girlfriend. Put on "Roses need the rain" and sing the words "I love you more than yesterday, I love you less than tomorrow/I need you every minute of every day, like roses need the rain." Beautiful.
