Book Description

November 14, 2011
It is a cold, wet, living nightmare when 12-year-old Maya St. Fleur finds herself on a makeshift boat bulging with other Haitians fleeing their island for a better life in the States. The sordid degradation and horror of that trip will mark her for life. The name of the one who has coerced her to leave the country and family she loves is Henri Chenet—perpetrator of unspeakable acts against her mother; blackmailer; and father of the boy who makes her heart beat with young love. Consumed with a desire for vengeance, she nevertheless vows to, one day, kill the son he cherishes above all else. Years later, she reconnects with her childhood love in Miami, and they fall for each other all over again. Will she be able to follow through with her dark, murderous plan hatched so long ago? Co-narrated by the Baron Samedi, Vodou Spirit of Death, Saturday Comes is an atmospheric tale of love and hate; of Haiti’s long-smoldering societal and class issues; of the magic, which reigns over the everyday lives of Haitian natives, and of the unseen forces that draw human beings together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saturday Comes - An exciting first novel March 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
Haiti, Vodou, The Hero's journey - a book you can't put down - what more could you ask for? I heard about Saturday Comes before I had the opportunity to read it, and I was not disappointed. It has all the elements of a gritty and compelling tale of love and loss, the adventures of a young Haitian girl who has to make her way in an unknown world. It's been a while since I stayed up into the morning hours to finish a book. Maya, Baron Samedi and Madame Mirta are richly drawn characters and Fabius' description of Maya's dance performances are magical invocations reminiscent of the work of Maya Deren.
This highly imagined book could be a film, or at least an audio book - more please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful first novel from accomplished author January 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
Author Carine Fabius is an accomplished and prolific writer. It was, therefore, with great anticipation that I looked forward to her first novel, Saturday Comes. As a reader, I want to lose myself in a story infused with colors, scents, textures, and sounds that take me off on an adventure. Fabius's story does not disappoint. Set in Haiti and Miami's South Beach, we venture off on a trail of Vodou, unrequited love, and a desire for revenge. There are strong feminine characters, including the mysterious Haitian dancer, Maya, her adoptive Mother, Madame Mirta, and Valentina, the pragmatic and determined detective. The spirit world has its' own representative, that of Baron Samedi, the Vodou Spirit of Death, whose input is interwoven throughout the tale. He warns the characters to think wisely; their decisions will determine the outcome of events. This reader was kept on edge, turning each page eagerly, in this delightful first and very successful novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Come Saturdays' many distinct and unique voices January 1, 2013
Format:Paperback
With an insider's intimacy author Carine Fabius dispels the religious, social and cultural stereotypes and myths shrouding her native Haiti in an atmospheric coming-of-age tale that pits the bourgeois Chenet family against the impoverished Saint Fleurs - their live-in cook Jizzeline and her young daughter Maya. Driven to despair by her abusive employer, Jizzeline secures her daughter's passage to Miami in a makeshift boat, spiriting the girl away from the monstrous Monsieur Chenet and his son Sylvain, a childhood ally. Washed ashore, near death, and unable to locate her aunt, Maya is adopted by Madame Mirta, a practicing vodou priestess, who teaches her young apprentice the good aspects of the craft. But Maya's forced estrangement leaves her fixated on revenge against her mother's tormentor. Summoning Baron Samedi (Lord of Saturday), Maya decides Sylvain must pay for his father's transgressions.

Loved Saturday Comes' many distinct and unique voices; and its insightful and original take on vodou and its practitioners, and an (Haitian) immigrant's sojourn, one that is rarely portrayed with such depth, dignity and sensitivity. Filled with a multicultural cast of quirky characters you'll either love or hate, Fabius' tightly woven, imaginative tale kept me reading late into the night. Baron Samedi, also known as Father of Death, commanded my attention, and disrupted my dreams, as this story of lust, love, magic and hatred spun out of control. How accurate are the vodou rituals? I wondered. I suspect, or at least I'm hoping, there's more in store for Maya Saint Fleur, her brother Lionel, and Detective Valentina Ruiz. Read this fast-paced, page-turner with caution, for Fabius is a master storyteller.

5.0 out of 5 stars relentless suspense August 30, 2012
Format:Paperback
I was born in Haiti and this novel threw me back to the mysterious island my family left reluctantly so long ago. It churned my psyche, filled my soul and gave the reader in me enough suspense to keep me from distracting thoughts. That rarely happens when i read. Get this book. You will not just learn so much about Haitian culture but also bathe the reader in you in love, suspense and what else... Vodou.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saturday Comes- My Review April 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
Saturday Comes is simply a great novel. Ms. Fabius keeps bringing quality content that satisfies this reader's need for fresh topics that haven't been overdone in the mainstream book market. ("If I never read another vampire novel, it will be too soon!".) There is always a surprise element in her books that delights me. This one had a surprise narrator that really adds to the plot. The story-line was great--intriguing and appropriately scary.

When I read her book, I felt like I really got an understanding of the complex social, cultural and religious dichotomies that are Haiti. The characters are really contemporary and I felt like I knew them. In fact, I loved the main character so much that I delayed finishing the book, because I didn't want it to end.

My request to Ms. Fabius is keep writing. Brava! Brava!
