Ivan,
By John D. Wimmer (Albany, NY) - See all my reviews

I bought my first Ivan Neville album around 1989 and I've been a huge fan since. His latest is another gem. Ivan produces a masterful blend of blues funk and pop that is innovative and all his own. Ivan pours his heart out in his lyrics including his love for his family, faith and life in general. Its ceratinly refreshing to hear this in these times. I do wish he would release more material. Any album of his is a must have.

After seeing Ivan Neville and bnd on David Letterman, I had to get this disc. I was in no way dissapointed. The music was melodic across the board and funked harder than anything I've heard in a long time (check out "Dance for Free"). The guest musicians add a nice flavor to the cd but don't walk in and overpower the main vibe of the record. Big props to the production on this cd as well. Not a hair out of place, even the ones that are left to be strays. Given the junk that is filling most airwaves these days, I hope this cd gets the play it so richly deserves. PS- I hope Amazon gets some downloads on their site soon so you can hear for yourself!

On his third album, Ivan Neville, eldest son of angel Aaron, hits all the spots and then some. It flows from one sexy bassline to his Hammond B3, to a stinging guitar riff, to his cigarette smoky, gin soaked vocal instrument. He makes it all fresh, though his props to the Meters, nods to Marvin Gaye and Sly Stone are neither flimsy nor simply reverent. They are just damn tasty! His ballads ache with sweet and sorrow experience, and the funk... well, it just don't get much better than this. Ivan has assembled the perfect accompaniement with a bevvy of heavy hitters (Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, his Dad, to name but a few), and the mix is clean, balanced, and never fails to move you where it grooves you. Do yourself a favor and pick up on this disc. Then go back and revist "Thanks."

This is an outsatnding CD. Anyone into real raw funk will love this album. The singing is extremely soulful and the backup singing with the likes of Bonnie Rait , Bobby Womack, Sweetpea Atkinson and Aaron Neville is beyond compare. The mellower tunes are also outstanding and one tune reminds me a little of Lenny Kravitz. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is the mix. It is heavy on the voice, bass and drums and sometimes leaves the other instruments weak. It is a shame that this record will probably never get any airplay except on college stations. Anyway my hat is off to David Letterman who brought this to my attention.

Wow! This is refreshing to hear some real music again.Funky grooves and a soulful, gravely voice. Obvious tributes to Sly, Marvin, and Beatles?! I've listened to this over twenty times and I'm still lovin' every minute of it! Hey you other soul artists, you should take notice of this... Ivan knows his musical heritage and acknowledges it with sincere respect. Thanks Ivan! Looking forward to your next release.. -Your fan for life! |
