Book Description

July 21, 2006
Riya and Amit have an arranged marriage and Riya hopes that theirs will be a bond blessed by love and companionship. They wed in India, but financial problems in the family dictate a new life in America. Finding herself surrounded by the temptations of a society of affluence and consumerism, Riya watches helplessly as her husband slowly slips into a world of addictions. They return to India united, though deeply scarred and irrevocably changed. Life proves to be neither predictable nor easy, and the author presents a finale as surprising as it is disturbing. Saturday Morning Omelettes is a colorfully woven tapestry of east and west. The struggles of young Riya and her husband have been subtly paralleled to the classic Hindu tale of Lord Ram and his passionate, troubled, and nearly tragic marriage to Sita. As the author reminds the reader throughout this novel, the epic is classic and timeless - beyond myth and culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, on multiple leves, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
"Saturday Morning Omelettes" by Kavita Khannen is a terrific book. The story is compelling, the characters are fascinating, the background is absorbing. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.

One of the many reasons I loved this book is that it works on so many different levels. The people in the book are very real--they have good points and flaws. They're interesting, and very "human." Then, the book is a fascinating insight into a culture that is very different from my own, and the fascination increases as the story describes the melding of the new culture with the familiar one. THere's so much here that's just so new to me...I was open-mouthed with amazement, yet felt throughout, "This just all makes so much sense!"

The ending just begs for a sequel...it's very "Gone with the Wind"-like, in that you just so badly want to know how it all turns out in the future. Ms. Khannen: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write the follow-up...we just have to know what happens next!

Congratulations to the author on writing an incredibly interesting, informative, and entertaining book. It's one of the best I've read in years!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut !, November 18, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
Very well writen book - basically draws you in and keeps you engaged throughout....Couldn't put it down and was eager to know the ending (which was very unexpected). The passages connecting the storyline to the Indian epic Ramayana are elegant and contribute critically to the overall feeling of authenticity that the author manages to create. Already looking forward to more work from Kavita...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read contemporary epic..., October 25, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
Very heartwarming story and extremely well written. I could not put the book down, once I started reading. I especially loved the beautiful poems at the end of the chapters and how the author has related the events to Hindu Holy book of Ramayana. There were a lot of things that I could relate to, experiences of first timers in US, for one. While most of the book was very realistic, the end was a little unexpected. I felt that it was unfair of Amit to make a unilateral decision about Riya, while not considering Riya's true love and happiness which were Saturday Morning Omelettes and not the other life. All in all, I really enjoyed reading the book and can't wait for a sequel or another book from the author.
