3.0 out of 5 stars A mix of colorful ingredients
This is a sensitive portrait of the Indian patriarchy. There are clever parallels between the key incidents in this plot and that of Ramayan, the timeless Indian epic in an attempt to depict Riya as the modern Sita, complete with an exile & a trial by fire. The ambiguity in the conclusion is a stark contrast to the otherwise lukewarm feel of the narration.Overall, "Saturday...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, on multiple leves, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
"Saturday Morning Omelettes" by Kavita Khannen is a terrific book. The story is compelling, the characters are fascinating, the background is absorbing. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.

One of the many reasons I loved this book is that it works on so many different levels. The people in the book are very real--they have good points and flaws. They're interesting, and very "human." Then, the book is a fascinating insight into a culture that is very different from my own, and the fascination increases as the story describes the melding of the new culture with the familiar one. THere's so much here that's just so new to me...I was open-mouthed with amazement, yet felt throughout, "This just all makes so much sense!"

The ending just begs for a sequel...it's very "Gone with the Wind"-like, in that you just so badly want to know how it all turns out in the future. Ms. Khannen: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write the follow-up...we just have to know what happens next!

Congratulations to the author on writing an incredibly interesting, informative, and entertaining book. It's one of the best I've read in years!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut !, November 18, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
Very well writen book - basically draws you in and keeps you engaged throughout....Couldn't put it down and was eager to know the ending (which was very unexpected). The passages connecting the storyline to the Indian epic Ramayana are elegant and contribute critically to the overall feeling of authenticity that the author manages to create. Already looking forward to more work from Kavita...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read contemporary epic..., October 25, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
Very heartwarming story and extremely well written. I could not put the book down, once I started reading. I especially loved the beautiful poems at the end of the chapters and how the author has related the events to Hindu Holy book of Ramayana. There were a lot of things that I could relate to, experiences of first timers in US, for one. While most of the book was very realistic, the end was a little unexpected. I felt that it was unfair of Amit to make a unilateral decision about Riya, while not considering Riya's true love and happiness which were Saturday Morning Omelettes and not the other life. All in all, I really enjoyed reading the book and can't wait for a sequel or another book from the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful novel, sparkling new voice in fiction, October 24, 2006

Kavita Khanna is a sparkling new voice in fiction. This book is almost lyrical. It captures your attention from the get-go, and sustains it. The writing is well paced, and the characters seem very real indeed. I was delighted to come across this book, and I look forward to other works by Ms. Khanna.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, October 23, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
As someone who isn't well versed in the Indian culture, I found it very interesting. I enjoyed the Hindu perspective and experience especially from my Americanized point-of-view. I have several Indian friends and the book helped me better understand their cultural influences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, September 18, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
I loved this book!!! Once I started reading it I had trouble putting it down. You are immediately immersed in the life of Riya and Amit, two young adults both from traditional Indian families about to embark on a new life together. The descriptions are so wonderful that you feel like you are a fly on the wall watching their life together. The ending was a bit of a surprise, however looking back on the entire story it made sense. Beautiful!

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-written novel, February 4, 2007
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
"Saturday Morning Omelettes" is a realistic depiction of everyday life in upper-middle class India. The social support as well as societal pressures are accurately represented. The author weaves a tale of trial and triumph, and more trial. The ending, though unexpected, is powerful. The author has the ability to make the reader feel the emotions of the characters. Overall a very well written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars As reviewed by New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh, September 25, 2006
This review is from: Saturday Morning Omelettes (Paperback)
Even though countless people from India have settled in countries all over the globe, the
residents of their new countries oftentimes have little knowledge of Hindu culture. Thus
they miss out on the richness and wisdom of a civilization that has prospered for
millennia and continues to develop in exciting directions today.

Kavita Khanna's new novel, Saturday Morning Omelettes, will certainly help to bridge
the gap between people interested in learning more about Hindu life and the East Indians
who are making new homes and new lives throughout the world. Her book tells the story
of a young Indian couple as they journey from their native land to settle in the United
States. Ultimately devastated by the temptations of Western living, they return to India to
try to rebuild their lives.

This poignant and engaging story of love, adventure, and sacrifice has many parallels
with an age-old Hindu epic, the "Ramayan," a rich and culturally important tale involving
kings, princes, regal succession, political intrigue, fatal heartbreak, malicious demons, an
army of monkeys, and a festival of lights.

Saturday Morning Omelettes will certainly be appreciated by Indians, if only for its fresh
new perspective of the "Ramayan." At the same time, Americans and other non-Indians
will gain a much greater understanding of Hindu culture, including the all-important
family values, idol worship, and even arranged marriages. Without question readers will
enjoy this modern story with its roots deep in the past.
