From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10 That old adage about never judging a book by its cover has never been more appropriate than with this paperback novel. The cover photo depicts a young woman dressed in a flowing white prom dress held in the arms of a suitably handsome young man. Fortunately the story has almost nothing in common with the somewhat gooey cover. Five girls are preparing for the "big dance" that will change each of their lives. The girls couldn't be more different from each otherBeth Rose attending the dance alone, wearing her great aunt's "Cinderella" dress; Anne, the perfect girl possessing beauty, brains, the perfect boyfriend, and a big problem; Emily, who has invited a boy whom she hardly knows; Kip, the dance's organizer who doesn't have a date; and boy-crazy Molly. While the plot is certainly not new, Cooney weaves believable characters, dialogue, and realistic situations into it, creating a very readable book. Sure to be a big hit with young teen readers.Denise A. Anton, Corn Belt Library System, Normal, Ill.
