Fantastic example of how funny SNL can be, November 1, 2001
This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of 96-97 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is superb. I bought it from amazon a few months back and have watched it several times... definetly worth the minimal money I paid for it! it opens with a very funny Norm Macdonald impression of Bob Dole that gets interupted by... Bob Dole! and continues with some classics skits including... Spartans, The Roxbury Guys (With Tom Hanks), Star Wars Auditions, The Joe Peci show that gets interupted by... Joe Peci and a side splitting performance from Robert Deniro and one of the funniest Celebrity Jeopardy's ever with Burt Reynolds (Norm Macdonald), Jerry Lewis (Martin Short) and how could you have a celebrity jeopardy skit without Sean Connery! One of the cheapest SNL videos but also one of the best! You wont regret buying this comedy masterpiece!

This tape includes 92 min. of the most funniest sketches from the 96-97 season like the roxbury guys, MKG,the hilarious Chris Rock monologe, and the Spartan cheerleaders, but it also includes alot of celbs too, such as Alec Baldwin, Robert DeNiro,Bob Dole, Tom Hanks, Pamela Anderson, Chris Rock, Martin Short, Kevin Spacey,Rosie O'Donnel and Dana Carvey just to name a few. There really isnt anything on here not worth watching.I would deffently reccomend this to any SNL fan!

While somewhat inconsistent, quality comedy overall., November 21, 1999

While the general consensus seems to be that SNL in the later 90's hasn't been as good as it was earlier in the decade, this tape definitely captures some of it's better moments. Some of the highlights: Norm MacDonald doing David Letterman is absolutely hilarious, as he gets everything from the look, mannerisms, laugh, and other idiosyncracies down perfect. In another great skit, Johnny Carson (played brilliantly by Dana Carvey) and Phil Donahue are about to go tee off for a day of golf but can't leave until Johnny finds his keys. Once again, impressions are dead pan. Some other good skits include Will Farrell playing a wacked out host of 'Space, the Final Frontier,' asking a beffudled Jeff Goldblum some outrageous questions. There are a few weak points on the tape. Personally I was never a big fan of the Spartan Cheerleaders. Jim Bruer's 'Goat Boy' was considerably more annoying than funny. And of all the 'Joe Pesci Show' skits, the one choosen for this tape wasn't one of the better ones. Despite some flaws, this tape is well worth a look. Chris Rock's opening monologue gets it off to a great start.
