The Amazing Adventures of Canteen Boy. Excellent!,
By Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler (DVD)
Look at the title of this DVD (or VHS) and that's exactly what you get. "SNL's The Best of Adam Sandler" is a must-have for any Sandler fan. Even if you're not a big SNL fan, it's still a great collection to have. When you purchase this bad boy, what you get is about 73 minutes of pure hilarity and the chaotic genius of Mr. Sandler. Every skit is hilarious and will leave you wanting more. This is something you will want to watch over and over again. (Then, you'll watch it again!) With an all-star cast and plenty of big star cameos, this is an outstanding collection. Some of the skits included are: The Denise Show, Cajun Man, Grandma, Canteen Boy, Opera Man, Zagat's, Gap, Schmitts Gay, Herilhy Boy, Iraqui Pete, and many more. Some of the stars (and cameos) included are, David Duchovny, Rob Schneider, Alec Baldwin, Chris Farley, David Spade, Michael Keaton, and many more. My favorite skit by far has to be "The Denise Show." No matter how many times I see that skit, it never gets old. I also enjoyed the "Grandma" skit, with the very funny Michael Keaton and the late Chris Farley. (Chris Farley is probably the one who brought out the best in Sandler, as he is in many of them. We miss you Chris!) All in all, an EXCELLENT collection. Topnotch all the way on all fronts. This is a DVD (or VHS) that will entertain you over and over again. If you love Adam Sandler, or SNL, then this is the collection you've been waiting for.

Definitely Well Put Together,

Occasionally Saturday Night Live makes "best of" videos when actually it's not really THEIR best, and you remember those episodes when they WERE really funny... but that was not the case. The video was very funny, and as an SNL fanatic, I know the funniest moments, and they were pretty much on there. I was impressed, and I recommend this to all. (especially adam sandler lovers)

A Sandler CelebraSHON,

For me, Saturday Night Live stopped being funny enough to watch about the same time Adam Sandler left the show. This collection of Sandler moments is a little uneven and fails to include some of my favorites, but there is still plenty of great comedy to be found here. You get performances of such Sandler classics as The Chanukah Song, Lunch Lady Land, and a less famous little Christmas ditty (but, alas, no Red Hooded Sweatshirt song), not to mention his Springsteen performance of Dancing in the Dark alongside Courteney Cox. His Operaman persona is well represented with performances scattered throughout the 87 minutes of comedy mayhem. Cajun Man puts in an appearance, as does Lucy the Gap sales girl. The Canteen Boy segment is rather hard to forget, featuring the icky advances of Scout leader Alec Baldwin to Sandler's innocent persona. Proving that this comedy remains timely, Iraqi Pete shows up to draw the jeers of an American audience. There are a couple of skits of the typically inane SNL variety that seemed out of place here: the house-sitting and New York restaurant guide commercials; it is actually Chris Farley who manages to extract significant humor out of these otherwise unimpressive offerings. The selection from The Denise Show is very funny, but I would have favored the final one featuring Nicole Kidman as the better choice. I was very happy to see one of Sandler's Halloween costume suggestion skits included here; as funny as this selection is, though, I was a little disappointed that it was not the very first one-that was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life. All in all, there is something here for every Adam Sandler fan; it is a tribute to his comedic genius that there was not enough room on this tape to include all of his fans' favorite moments from the show.

Before Billy, Happy and Bobby Boucher, there was Opera Man, and Canteen Boy... this is such a funny movie that will keep you laughing. There are many good skits that feature other greats like Chris Farley, and Mike Myers. If you enjoy any of his movies, you will love the SNL tribute to him as much as I did. It is great!

Adam Sandler is one of a very select group of people capable of drawing millions due mainly to his personality. As we've seen recently, this upsets many persons who would dictate what is good and right for the public to find funny. As far as I'm aware people have been laughing at the 'ridiculous and relatively disgusting' since the beginning of the artform. To blame this unique and innovative comedian for the decline of comedy is just ludicrous. All I'll say is jealously is a very ugly emotion, and while people are drawn to Sandler's earnestness, they're probably repulsed by other comic greats' extreme pomposity.Adam is zany and hilarious, no topic, no matter how inane or commonplace is sacred to him. SNL is one of the first places that the world was introduced to this comic talent. Just enjoy!

Largely lives up to title as "Best of" Sandler,
This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler (DVD)
Compiling Adam Sandler's best moments is a little easier than some other performers because he wasn't on the show for that long, comparatively, and for most of that time he was very much a junior member of the cast. Also, his style of comedy tended toward the monologue, so the common SNL problem of a regular cast member's sketch being ruined by an inadequate guest host didn't often befall Sandler. As a result his "Best of" video is one of the most satisfying in the series. It's very hard to dispute that this was his best work, because there's not too much more out there. About the only criticism one could make of the claim that this is his best work is that this video came out before the 25th anniversary special, which has perhaps Sandler's most comedically mature appearance on SNL. And the work is all really funny because largely there's no one else in frame but Sandler. The few times he shared the stage were with other cast members, except for a couple of very funny sketches with Alec Baldwin and Kirstie Alley. About the only thing that's unsatisfying about this work is that the additional material on the DVD is limited to one sketch and one (very funny) interview with Conan O'Brien. I would've preferred having some behind-the-scenes commentary by Sandler, or some information about Sandler's career on SNL. In this regard, though, "The Best of Adam Sandler" is no better or worse than any other entrant in this series. In other words, unless you REALLY are addicted to being able to search for chapters on DVD, save your money and buy the VHS version.

I got this video for Christmas and I watched it over and over again. It was really hilarious; some of the best parts were the Schmidts Gay commercial, The Chanukah song, the Denise show, Lucy the Gap Girl, and Canteen Boy. Besides seeing Adam you also get to see some of the other funniest guys around. Including Chris Farley, Rob Schneider, David Spade, and many more. There wasn't one skit that I didn't laugh aloud at.

A Hilarious Look At Adam Sandler's "SNL" Career,
By Anthony Nasti "Tony" (Staten Island, New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler (DVD)
Adam Sandler spent five years on "Saturday Night Live", giving the show some of its most inspired characters and hilarious moments. "Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Adam Sandler" compiles 70 minutes of Sandler's funniest moments on the show.
This dvd all includes all of Sandler's most popular characters: Canteen Boy (in the controversial camping sketch with Alec Baldwin), Lucy Branw the Gap Girl, Cajun Man and of course, Opera Man (the funniest sketches on the dvd). Also, there's his hilarious "Weekend Update" costume suggestions, and the hysterical "Zagat's" sketch with Chris Fraley (I laughed so hard at this one I started to cry). Of course, the best moments on this dvd are the songs. "The Present Song" is an underrated number that is a love letter to Santa (the joke is that Sandler's Jewish but he's writing to Santa), but it's hilarious. "Lunchlady Land" is a parody of a rock opera and Chris Farley steals the show as a bemoled lunch lady. And of course, there's the classic "Hannukkah Song". There have been three different editions of this song, but the first one is the best. If I have any complaints, it's that they included the second "Il Cantore" sketch in the hotel. Don't get me wrong, this sketch is very funny, but the first one in the Italian restaurant is much funnier. I also wish the included a Tony Vallencourt and Audience McGee sketch. Other than that, this is an excellent look at Sandler's "SNL" career.

A fine showing of Sandler's best,

This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler (DVD)
Adam Sandler is my favorite comedian. No matter what he does, it seems to be golden. There hasn't been a movie from him that I've seen that I didn't like. But before he was making movie...he was on Saturday Night Live. And although SNL [is weak] today, it was extremely funny in the early and mid 90's. My favorite member of the cast, of course, was none other than Adam Sandler. So when I saw this DVD at Best Buy, you know I had to buy it.And it was well worth it. We get the great Operaman skits, the hilarious Canteen Boy (probably the funniest SNL skit ever), and the skit I can relate to the most, the Denise show. There are also many other funny skits worth watching. My only criticism is that there should be a lot more special features. That's one of the reasons you buy a DVD player, so I think a lot of emphasis should be on special features. Maybe some extra commentary, or maybe a behind-the-scenes of SNL type of thing would be great, so they fall short there. But overall, this is a great purchase, and a great addition to anyone's DVD collection.

Omigod! It's The Best Of Adam Sandler!,
By
This review is from: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler (DVD)
While not as versatile as Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler had his own special brand of humor that made him one of "Saturday Night Live's" must - watch comedians during the early 1990s'. Relying more on characters than impressions, he had an intense flair for physcial comedy, something few castmembers were good at.For a solid 70 minutes of laughter, this dvd can hardly be beat. All of his most popular charcters are here - "Canteen Boy" (in a rather memorable sketch with Alec Baldwin), "Cajun Man", Lucy the Gap girl and , of course "Operaman". Also, there's more than a few one - time characters who make their appearnaces. "Iraqi Pete" seems is hilarious, though has eerie echoes of what's going on in the world today. The bellboy from the "Room Service" sketch (actually, he also appeared in the "Il Cantore" sketch) is also funny. My favorite is Hank Gelfand from the "Zagat's" sketch, though Chris Farley actually does better than him here. I suggest this dbd. I guarantee you'll laugh your pants off. Here's hoping tha Lorne Michaels gets his stuff together and asks Sandler to host the show again soon. |
