Extras push it over the top for me...,

This review is from: Saturday Night Live the Best of '06/'07 (Widescreen) (DVD)
A 90-minute dvd of the supposed best of '06/'07 season. These SNL "best of" collection's are always hit or miss so people's mileage may vary, but i found this one to be good enough. I liked most of these and can easily see myself coming back to them from time to time making it a worthy purchase(especially for under $10 bucks as it stands now). For those on the fence, maybe the 'exclusive' extras might do the trick as i found these to be rather enjoyable as well:
* audio commentary- mostly enjoyable to listen to as there are some laughs to be had due to the participation of some cast/writers who worked on the skits. Problem is, it's not a group of them sitting together watching the entire dvd commenting, only members that have something to do with that skit. So if something funny is going on in one segment's commentary, it's over once a new skit starts with the next batch of commentators. * uncensored **** in a box video. * photo gallery- about 15 in a slideshow. * 2 never-before-seen sketches, one with Keenan Thompson(as a woman) and Peyton Manning which was ok. The other one was pretty good though with Fred Armison and Justin Timberlake. Say what you will about JT, but the guy seems to have a sense of humor about himself and he usually is in some of my favorite sketches(as one of the Gibb brothers, as an omelette, something-or-other in a box, and in this sketch a stockboy). And yes, he gets to do some of his dance moves in this one too(is this contractual?). * Outtakes from "Weekend Update"- this one put the extras over the top for me. The updates are usually my favorites so it was great to see this bonus. Even though you get the 'rejects'/jokes-gone-bad, it's fun to watch how Seth and Amy handle it. It runs almost 6 minutes. Overall, the dvd is recommended at a cheap price as it's something you'll watch more than once or twice. Btw, on the back cover it says English Dolby Digital 5.1(i'll take their word on that), Anamorphic widescreen 1.78:1(check), subtitles SDH(could not access this on two dvd players, but maybe it's just me).

This DVD has the sketch with Peyton Manning and Will Forte as a basketball coach doing the most ridiculous dance to try to inspire his team. Watch it and just try not to laugh out loud.

I hope they make a "best of" for every season,
This review is from: Saturday Night Live the Best of '06/'07 (Widescreen) (DVD)
I've never been a big fan of the "best of" cast member or host DVDs. Those DVDs offer the same type of skits & humor over & over because it is the same person. On the other hand, this DVD offers a variety of different skits, all of which are much better than the average SNL skit.
It was funny ('interesting funny', not 'humor funny') to see some skits that didn't make the cut when deciding which skis would air [in the DVD extras]. It's no wonder they did not make it. However, the un-aired weekend update parts [in the extras] were both 'interesting funny' and 'humor funny'. I will definitely buy "best of <year>" if they keep coming out -- I hope they do. *Much* better that sorting the skits by the 'main' person in the skit.

The DVD features clips from some of the funniest episodes ever in SNL...Justin Timberlake, Jake Gyllenhaal and Julia Louis-Dreyfus were the best, and "Two A-Holes": absolute classic!

Regardless of the negativity that SNL has lost its punch, sorry, this compilation is dead on! I watched SNL when Gilda and the bunch were around and I have stayed with them, accepting the newness, the change of the times and the political agenda it encompassed. SNL kept going, bringing it all in and still taking those punches. I really bought this collection because I am a huge fan of Jake Gyllenhaal. I think he is on the road to many incredible performances, ones that will surpass his already brilliant career. His choice of movies and characters showcase a talent not seen by many of the new people and his intervention on SNL was a delight showcasing a great sense of humor. And that is what it is all about, having a sense of humor. Get off the train wreck of negativity that SNL is dead. Get on board and laugh. We really need it, peeps. C'mon, watch and laugh. Become human again!

There are a few funny moments missing on the dvd, but for the most part they're all here. Amy Poehler's "lady parts" gag is on here, and really that's all that matters.

Either 06/07 was a horrible season, resulting in very few clips to release, or SNL is very stingy about these DVDs. This is the first one I bought and I was shocked by how little made it on this release. It started off with Jake Gyllenhaal's opening monologue, then skipped over the rest of his show and flitted over other shows with 1-2 clips max from each. There were no other monologues. It's very much like the "Best of" shows you would see on the E channel - brief and leaving you feeling short-changed. I deeply regret this purchase.
If you're looking for a particular show, go to amazon video download feature (which lets you purchase a show, though it looks like even that's edited down) or go to the SNL website which will give you A LOT more clips to see than this DVD.

It was pretty funny, but I wish they would have had some more skits from Justin Timberlake. Then it would have been a five star item!

BEST SEASON IN A MINUTE!,

So, I just have to say that the 06-07 season of SNL was probably the best one since Will Ferrel left. Which left me with a lot of optimism for the following season (which, due to writers strike, has only produced about three shows so far :( But 06-07 was the first season in years without Tina Fey as head writer (I couldn't have been happier!) and the cast and writers do alot throughout the season to play with new ideas and sketches. Andy Samberg introduces the SNL digital shorts, and although he isn't my favorite necessarilly, the digital shorts were pretty good. Here we get the one he did with J.Timb called "D*ck in a box". The best two shows of the season, were lightyears ahead of the others though, and if you ask me, should have had their own DVD releases. The Alec Baldwin episode was almost flawless... I taped it the second time it was on TV because it was so good. The Drew Barrymore episode was great as well. This set compiles a good amount of sketches, but not enough from those two episodes. Personally I was just glad that the show was watchable after a few real clunker seasons with Tina Fey. Since the writers strike is still ongoing, its fair to say that you can still (as of 1-27-08) see most of these episodes during the proper Saturday night time slots. Def look out for the above mentioned Alec Baldwin or Drew Barrymore episodes... classic TV in my opinion. Otherwise, this isn't a bad compilation of all the shows of the season. Ok. |
