Editorial Reviews

There is no drop-off in laughs from the first to second volume of Will Ferrell's work on Saturday Night Live. Giggle along with his recurring characters, including James Lipton (interviewing Kate Hudson as a wonderfully ditzy Drew Barrymore), a wickedly clever George W. Bush, and one-half of the smarmy Lovers couple. This volume spotlights Ferrell's ability to go successfully over-the-top whether as an overbearing boss (check out how long he keeps stabbing a doomed coworker), a strict airplane pilot, an absent-minded doctor, or the world's oldest baby. There's plenty of unabashed (near) nudity and risky violence, which keeps the SNL tradition of "Not Ready for Prime Time"; check out what longtime hosts of the morning talk show resort to when the much-needed teleprompter fails. All that plus "Janet Reno's Dance Party" (with guest Rudy Giuliani) makes this the perfect pick-up for those who could not get enough of Ferrell with volume 1. --Doug Thomas

Product Description

The hilarious antics of one of SNL 's all-time favorites are so many in number that a second collection was warranted to continue his outrageous best-of" moments. Includes Janet Reno's Dance Party," The Lovers," James Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio," the classic Wake Up and Smile," the legendary Bill Brasky" and many more. 2004/color/79 min/NR/fullscreen.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Middling Collection Of Will's "SNL Career March 9, 2005
Format:DVD
After pretty much laughing my (...) off while watching "The Best Of Will Ferrell", I expected to do the same with "The Best Of Will Ferrell - Volume 2". However, when I watched it on tv in July, I was extremely disappointed. Outside of a few sketches, I hardly uttered a chuckle. However, when I saw this dvd a few weeks ago, I knew I had to buy it, thinking I might change my opinion. Needless to say, it remained the same.

"The Best Of Will Ferrell - Volume 2" is supposed to include sketches featuring some of Will's lesser known recurring characters that failed to make it on the (10 million times funnier) first volume, including rude and incompetent obstertrician Dr. Beamen, Hank of Bill Braskie's Buddies", and Ted Brogan", the 37 - year - old baby. Also there are some sketches that feature non - recurring bits. None of these sketches are funny.

However, there are a few funny sketches. They are the opening Bush sequence, the famed "Wake Up And Smile", "Lovers" (though there's another version of this sketch with the same characters on volume one except it's with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore and it's much funnier), "Red Ships Of Spain" (with Will doing his Robert Goulet impression), and "Inside The Actors Studio" with Kate Hudson as Drew Barrymore (though the one with Alec Baldwin as Charles Nelson Reilly on the first edition was much funnier).

The only other watchable sketch is "Janet Reno's Dance Party", which really only catches fire when she beats up Mayor Rudolph Giulianni. It's pretty good, but Will impersonated Reno 13 times, so there are probably better Janet Reno sketches out there.

Also, there are many much more funnier characters that didn't appear or only appeared briefly on the first volume that without a doubt should have been included here. I'm talking about Frank Henderson (from the "Get Off The Shed" bit), David Leary (from "Dog Show"), Tom Wilkinson (from "Morning Latte"), Sean Patrick Flannery (from the Mary Katherine Gallagher sketches), Baron Nocturna (from "Goth Talk"), Don West (from the "Shopping At Home" sketches), and his Ted Kaczynski and Neil Diamond (where's "Storytellers") impressions.

And why not include more Culps, Spartans, Roxbury, "Jeopardy!", Harry Caray and Saddam Hussein sketches? Yeah, they were on volume one, but they were truly Will's best! And as a final gripe, they could have given us at least one of the Bush/Gore presidential debates sketches.

Overall, you can say this is a complete abomination, but it is tempting. Buy at your own risk and hope that volume three comes out soon and it's much, much better than this dvd.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money September 15, 2004
By Bill
Format:DVD
If you liked the first volume, but didn't think it was Ferrell's best work, then do NOT waste your time or money on this one. There was maybe three sketchs on the whole DVD that were above mediocre (the Bush intro, the teleprompter skit, and the Janet Reno skit), the rest I am at a loss for words for how they could even be considered the "best of" this incredible comedic talent. Some of the skits were ones that were shown on the first volume, albeit briefly. Just a really horrible, horrible job on this one. The first one missed some great skits, but this one was far worse. It is becoming pretty obvious that SNL is using these "Best of" DVD's not to pay tribute to some of the best comedic talent our society has ever turned out (like Ferrell, Hartman, Sandler, Farley, etc...), but just a way to make a quick buck off the fans of these comedians without having to do any work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time September 11, 2004
Format:DVD
I actually thought the first volume was pretty funny, even though they didn't include some of his best, namely anything neil diamond. I rented this one thinking I'd be laughing my butt off again, but it was a MAJOR letdown. I laughed maybe 3 times total. The choices of skits was horrible, including extended scenes from the first one. Remember that Janet Reno fighting Rudy Guliani skit from the first volume? Well thats back in entirety, but without merit, because the only funny part was that dirty fighting line, and now its old news. What the producers of these SNL best-of's need to do is set up an online poll with the skits he does, and have the true fans pick the best. What I'm guessing they did is put together another DVD really quick, hoping to capitalize on Will's recent popularity.

All in all, don't even think about buying this, even if you liked the first volume. This second one isn't the real Will Ferrell, its just plain bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm, not that funny
This DVD has its moments but it is definitely not as funny as Vol.1. Also there is a lot more "crude" humor than I would like.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesnt do him justice
They should let the fans pick the scenes that go on the DVD. Not all should be on "best of" in fact, how do you have multiple "best of".
