Just Great.,

This review is from: Saturday Night & Sunday Morning (Audio CD)
Only the best happenin' here! Killer harmonies and powerful songs. The Best (Ralph Stanley) singing with The Best (all the rest). One really great song after another...... (one cd has "saturday night" energy, and other has "sunday morning" energy) ----- Every song (5) with Judy Marshall is just fantastic (of course). "Heaven's Bright Shore" (w/Judy Marshall and Allison Krauss) is superb and one of the very best here....... This beyond-great sounding trio also sings "A Vision of Mother" (the original song, written by Carter and Ralph Stanley, is on the Complete Columbia Stanley Brothers (c.1948) - and this is one of the best Stanley Brothers albums you could have). ------------- There are so many great songs here - just one right after another -like Midnite Storm w/Vince Gill, I'll Meet you in Church Sunday Morn w/Bill Monroe, Great High Mountain, w/emmylou Harris and Judy Marshall, Sea of Regret/All I ever Loved was You, w/ Ricky Scaggs---------- but my personal pick for the number one killer song goes to "Going Up Home to Live in Green Pastures" with Larry Sparks. It is simple and powerful and it takes me there.............. I give this cd 100 diamonds on black velvet... and those would be stars....

I have been listening to bluegrass music for all of my 52 years and have seen the best performers, including Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. This album is absolutely superb.

The best bluegrass album I own,

I can't believe more people have not reviewed this album. I love all sorts of music, including bluegrass--rock, blues etc--but this is one of my desert island discs. Really, if I could only have five discs, this double album would represent bluegrass for me. It is that good.

Enough Tributes,
This review is from: Saturday Night & Sunday Morning (Audio CD)
I'm sorry, but I'm getting tired of these guest star/tribute albums. I'm finding most to be disappointing, including this one.
Yes, the lineup on these two discs is outstanding, and I'm a big Ralph Stanley fan. The musicianship on the discs is, not surprisingly, first rate. Same for the recording and song selection. And Ralph is in fine form. But IMHO the sum does not equal the parts. There's no flow to the recording, and most importantly, there is a lack of intensity and feeling that is definitely present on so many of Stanley's other discs, solo and with the Clinch Mountain Boys. Iif you want to know what makes Stanley special, stick to his original stuff. |
