"Once In A While" an album comes along...,
By Gregory N Adams (Chetek, WI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saturday (Audio CD)
Thank God someone at Capitol Records saw their way clear to reissue this classic album! The Reivers blend smart, poetic lyrics with seamless, clean production to create downhome sophistication. That sounds like an oxymoron, but other bands like BoDeans and Soul Asylum have achieved the same level of elevated, homegrown style. Saturday is a fantastic example of John Croslin's (main songwriter/lead vocals/producer) brilliance. The guitar sounds are perfect; Croslin's deep, creamy vocals are sweetened by the hand-in-glove harmonies of Cindy Toth and Kim Longacre. An incredible album from an overlooked band.

This is top five best of the 80s for me, and one of my favorite albums ever. I bought the album nearly two decades ago simply because I liked the cover art and was then dumbfounded when I heard the bewitching blend of harmonies, jangles, riffing, and achingly beautiful melodies that this this group lays down on this amazing record.
I was so grateful to finally see it on cd and it has played non-stop since it arrived. This is the rare recording that you can literally hear over and over and over and over and never tire of and always sing along. If you like smart, melodious, guitar driven, two-part harmony rich music that sounds as timeless as true art does, buy this cd now and forever hum these remarkable songs in your head with joy and a happy heart. This is a fantastic album!

Great songwriting,

The Reivers were one of the best live bands and I was fortunate to see then numerous times when I lived in Austin, Texas from 1984-88. This record is a little more raw than "End of the Day," but it captures their spirit and the amazing harmonies between John Croslin and Kim Longacre.

Back when this was originally recorded the Reivers were the talk of Austin. Little heard of anywhere else, but they were supposed to be the next BIG act. They should have been. "Saturday" is one of those gems that you will find yourself drawn to often. It's a must have. I never got to see them play. Really wish I had.

I'm listening to this CD on headphones while at my very boring office job. All I can say is that this album still has all the energy, style, amazing harmonies and fantastic playing that it had on the first day I listened to it when I bought it on vinyl back in the 80s. In fact, ALL of The Reivers albums are wonderful. If ever a band never got the recognition they deserved, The Reivers are it. Perhaps if a certain band (REM in fact) had never overshadowed them, The Reivers would still be around. But maybe their 4 studio albums (3 as The Reivers and 1 as Zeitgeist) are all we really needed...because how in the world can they ever have kept up such a fine body of work without getting tired? Standouts on this album: In Your Eyes; Secretariat; Baby; and Saturday.
