It should be said first that fine as the book and lyrics certainly are, it may be Lex de Azevedo's musical score that finally made Saturday's Warrior the true phenomenon that it became. It really is good stuff -- especially as originally arranged by Azevedo and rendered, under his supervision, by the cast, chorus and musicians of the original 1974, Southern California stage production.

With its perfect cast (the Clinger Sisters, the Engemanns, Heather Young, Ric de Azevedo, Cam Clarke, et al), and Azevedo's original musical arrangement - as effective today as it was in 1974, by the way, and featuring a traditional keyboard/bass/drums instrumentation with Azevedo himself on keyboards, plus the rich harmonies of a live chorus - this digital re-master of the original 1974 soundtrack remains the definitive recording of this 35-year-old classic. It also is the most complete: one will not find the evocative "Voices" on other Saturday's Warrior recordings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pale imitation of a great production. March 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Be warned, this one is not the original. In fairness, it doesn't claim to be, but the packaging implies that it is.
From the very first song I knew, this is not the Saturdays Warrior I fell in love with. Still, I tried, to keep an open mind.
It reminded me of Christmas time; where time honored classics are butchered by well meaning artists of the hour, (certain they can do better) through every shopping mall across the land.
The singers are decent enough and at least capable or carrying a tune. But, due in no small part to the "Easy listening," style song arrangement; the performances lack the power and emotional intensity of the original. This version sounds more like a "primary" or "mutual" production, of an inspiring play. Which of course isn't fair, but fairness doesn't really enter into it, if you can't improve or at least match what you're copying-- Stay home.

I LOVE this soundtrack, much more then the original cast recording. "Paper Dreams" still gets me! THIS is the reason it receives a 5 star. The sellers on Amazon should be ashamed of themselves though! $118??? Are you crazy? I just bought it for $11 on ebay! Buy this soundtrack, but don't pay these crazy prices!

These songs will help you understand through Jimmy's trials and difficulties. An LDS classic.

Glad to find the original CD in video and music, so I got this for my daughter and granddaughter. Not LDS gospel, but a fun video to watch.
