Culture of Fear Introduction

Biography

When they met in the mid-1990s, Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza instantly bonded over their shared passion for bossa nova. Dedicating their 1996 debut Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi to bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Washington, D.C.-based duo have spent nearly two decades creating boundary-warping, complexly crafted electronic music partly inspired by bossa ... Editorial Reviews

Seventh studio album from one of the most influential and respected names on the electronic/dance music scene. First record to be completely devoted to their Bossa Nova roots and feature all female vocals.

Yes: It includes a Digital Download coupon. Yes: It feel like 180 gram (or better) vinyl.

Ever since I became aware of this album on NPR's "First Listen" a couple weeks ago, I was intrigued. I also knew that if this was going to be Vinyl release, it would sound awesome and it does. This is simply a stunning record, and it is also very interesting that our favorite dj's have picked up "real" instruments and played thirteen stunning tracks. This is not a sample-driven chill out lounge record, this is real basso nova music, and it makes great work to express the very concept, the feeling of "saudade". LouLou Ghelichkhani's vocals are simply devine, and all the music comes together in the warmth and fullness of vinyl. Keep your needle clean for this album, you don't want to miss anything.

The packaging of the record is simple and to the point, with the featured cover and a great write up on the back. Looking at the back of the record reminds me very much of Blue Note and Verve releases from the early 1960s.

I didn't see anything that said "180 gram" vinyl, but the record feels very substantial in hands, and the bass grooves are full and rich.

Inside the sleeve was a coupon code for downloading the digital album. It was interesting to note that the digital download came as a WAV file (uncompressed audio) instead of the typical MP3 file.

iTunes users will want to convert the tracks to MP3 or ACC using iTunes, but be sure your iTunes is set to at least 256Kb/s, to preserve the warmth of the recording.

Owning everything that a musical entity releases bestows a certain institutional knowledge that is hard to escape...in the case of TC's latest, "Saudade," it helps to remember what we love most about this musical collective led by Garza and Hilton: their unquenchable thirst for new musical challenges, all cloaked within TC's signature hypnotic downtempo ethos.

"Saudade" is definitively TC, this time filtered through their love of bossa nova. To drive the point home, fellow label mate Federico Aubele--whose "Berlin 13" is an underrated masterpiece of moody eurobossa electronica--is a frequent collaborator here. So are vocalists Natalia Clavier and Shana Halligan, among other female voices. It's a quieter, more reflective TC, even referred to on the outside cover as "The quiet sound of Thievery Corporation." For once, such pronouncements are not marketing hyperbole.

Another great addition to the TC catalog...you won't be disappointed.

Thievery Corporation is getting back to their "roots" on this album, featuring more vocals and laid back Brazilian influences, and less downtempo beats like their last few albums. A pleasant change, makes me think of cool summer nights by the beach. Ahhh...

We have heard other songs by Thievery Corporation when included on compilations in the past, including one of the Hotel Costes CD's. After reading about them, their influences are some of the most important, classic artists of Brazil. After reading this album was all about Brazilian sounds, we pulled the trigger......and don't regret it!

Great mix of sounds, vocals are smooth and melodic....exactly what we were looking for. This has a great lounge sound to it, not all all dance related. If you are looking for an intro into modern Brazil, this would be a great buy.

This is a terrific collection of Brazilian influenced, samba, bossa nova flavored music. I'm living in a place where winter doesn't want to end and this cd is keeping me sane. It sounds like days on the beach, warm nights under the stars. Love it.

I love the album. Sometimes their releases seem a little choppy as they drift through different genres, jumping from one country to another musically - not that it doesn't serve them well or detract from the albums as a whole. But the continuity here is very nice and makes this very soothing. All the contributing vocalists are wonderful and musically, I think this is the best they've ever been. The only disappointment is that the packaging of the CD was so sparse. Usually there are copious liner notes, inserts, booklets, etc. It almost seems thrown together at the last second.

Thievery Corporation went back to traditional bossa nova - before it merged with electronica. It is a great album for a lazy summer day.
