About the Author

Shirley Hensley was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. However, half of her relatives on her father's side reside in Tennessee. She spent much of her growing up years in Tennessee. How could she ever forget walking with her grandmother and help her carry buckets of water from the flowing spring on her property, then drinking it out of a dipper? At night, her grandma's lighting was coal-oil lamps. Shirley remembers too, sleeping on 'grandma's feather bed and feather pillows.' Shirley's favorite memory was watching her grandmother and aunts make homemade sauerkraut. 'I always enjoyed watching my relatives make homemade sauerkraut. More than that, I love getting a big tablespoon and eat it right out of the jar after it was ready. Even today, when I visit my aunt, she would open a jar of sauerkraut, give me a tablespoon, and I would gobble it down. Needless to say, she would love watching me enjoy myself. As you probably now know, sauerkraut is one of Shirley's favorite foods. Shirley keeps a jar of sauerkraut in her refrigerator and snacks on it once a day. Down home cooking and traveling are Shirley's two favorite activities. As a result of her love of cooking and traveling various parts of the world, she has collected hundreds of recipes from many people and places, and within her family tree. She loves sharing with people worldwide all the blessings that has been granted to her during her lifetime, her favorite being, cooking with sauerkraut.
