_Saugus_ masterfully creates vivid imagery of those places we all wish we were, but for some reason or another, just cant find the time or the excuse to get there.Summing up, thou shalt bow to the cow.

Bill Brown has definitely got L.A.'s number. He knows how mixed up it is, how it is a reflection of many of the problems in America, but he makes you love it anyway - love it like you love those crazy habits of your best friend. I read this book straight through and want to read it straight through again - just to get all of the subtle inter-connections which I'm sure I missed the first time. Saugus to the Sea sprinkles beauty amidst the insanity - like wildflowers growing alongside the freeway. Pensive and profound, but delivered in a very digestable, easy-going fashion. A refreshing read!

A tongue-in-cheek and wild-side ride,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saugus to the Sea (Paperback)
Saugus To The Sea is a remarkable debut novel by Bill Brown and set amidst the underground counter-culture of Los Angeles. Billy Brown is an ordinary man who finds himself increasingly sucked into an extraordinary web of events ranging from a network of antique underground sprinklers to a bizarre cabal of Arbor Day anarchists who have their ruthless sights set on Hollywood Boulevard. Establishing Bill Brown as an original writer of considerable talent, Saugus To The Sea is recommended as a tongue-in-cheek and wild-side ride of a conspiracy-theory read.

Sad and beautiful, like the tail end of summer afternoons in LA. Hilarious and painful, like LA itself. I didn't want the book to end, but it ends and leaves me heartbroken. The perfect book for those of us who drive all night and squint at the sunshine and dream of the ocean at the end of this long road.
