Editorial Reviews

From the Old Testament, The First Book of Samuel; this beautifully filmed story of David's life with King Saul has all the power and sensitivity of the Biblical account. King Saul, requesting a conqueror to slay the Philistine giant Goliath, is amused when the child-servant of God, David of Bethlehem, answers his request. With the faith in God, David slays the giant and wins the love and admiration of Israel and the King. David becomes a great warrior for the King's army. Even though King Saul comes to admire David, the King starts to slowly lose faith in God. With the spirit of God departed from Saul, David is anointed King of Israel, thus begins a love-hate relationship between Saul and David. As the blessings of God fall upon David and he is exalted, Saul's fury rises against him in this epic tale. Product Specs: DVD5; Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono; 113 minutes; Color; Aspect Ratio - 1.85:1 / 4x3 Letterbox / Year - 1965; SRP - $9.99 Bonus Features: Actor Bios, Bible Character Bios, Digitally Re-mastered, Previews

5.0 out of 5 stars Modest Biblical epic succeeds where grander efforts fail. September 7, 1999
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Saul and David, though a modest production, succeeds in capturing the Biblical milieu where grander efforts fail. Two outstanding actors and a competent script raise this film above the common run of the epic genre. Norman Wooland as Saul journeys from arrogant confidence to piteous despair and failure. Handsome Gianni Garko as David evolves from reverent obedience to rebelliousness and doubt. This film leaves a more striking and lasting impression of its subjects than others in the genre. Outstanding period drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RISE TO POWER OF THE HOUSE OF DAVID May 17, 2012
SAUL AND DAVID(1964) Written and Directed by Marcello Baldi. Based on
the book THE BIBLE by God.
Starring Norman Wooland(as King Saul), Pilar Clemens(as
Michal), Virgilio Teixeira(as Abner), Antonio Mayans(as Prince
Jonathan), Carlos Casaravilla (as Samuel), Stefy Lang(as Goliath) Paolo
Gozlino(as Joab) and Gianni Garko as David.
The tragedy of King Saul the first King of Israel whom, upon
losing the favor of the Lord, God of Israel, must watch as he is
gradually outshown and displaced by the Lord's annointed(and ancestor of
Ruth) David of Bethlehem whom after slaying the giant anakim Goliath
and growing to stature as a warrior, the increasingly tortured and
mentally unstable king seeks in vain to destroy.
Though an Italian film during the sword and sandal peplum era,
this happens to be the best film on its subject ever made. A fairly
strict adaptation of the first book of Samuel, the film might be a
little off putting for those unfamiliar with the history involved as it
includes everything and everyone of import to the story fairly well
leaping into history already going at full speed and not so much ending
as merely pulling away again leaving the surviving figures to progress
on towards their fates without being accompanied by the camera and the
audience. An intensley literate and serious film, the film plays almost
as a Jewish version of King Lear with Wooland being very good as the
increasingly deranged yet sympathetic Saul and Garko, as a David who
does not quite realize that he has a destiny with God and does not
truly want to displace the King.

5.0 out of 5 stars King David, arises! October 22, 2014
By Nina
Awesome! Excellent! Understandable, biblical entertainment which depicts historical accuracy straight from the Holy Bible. The best feature length film on the rise of King David of Israel, to date. The film is clear and concise and flows effortlessly, especially the portrayal of the ever-increasing jealous insanity of King Saul, when he found out that David and not one of his own sons, was his successor. A great family movie for both Christian and secular audiences, alike. Well worth the cost and your viewing time. It's a classic DVD and a definite keeper for your home collection. Nina
