I have had this book in my collection for many years, and have poured over the images, wondered about them, and even copied them in my own drawings. It is only now that I have actually read Rosenberg's essay, which clarifies a great deal about the artist's work in spite of being a little abstruse at times. The book was from a period in my youth when I took the time to explore art over many hours of introspection. I now rarely take the time to absorb such things in the bustle of working life.

I viewed Steinberg as a master at observation and characterization of cityscapes and their inhabitants. For the most part, his images transmitted emotion and perception for me, of how people viewed themselves and how they lived. Rosenberg, like all great critics, got me to think many steps further. Not only did he convince me that Steinberg was exploring modern identity, but he placed him in terms of art history in a uniquely original way: he was not of a "school" yet reflected all of the strains of 20C art (modernism, impressionism, post-modernism, expressionism, abstract impressionism, even dada and surrealism) while playing with certain boundaries, such as producing cartoons for reproduction that were original works of art. No doubt, I will have to re-read the essay over and over, so dense was it with references and evocation. The essay is also playful and recognizes that not even Steinberg is certain of the ultimate meaning of many of his images.

That being said, the images are absolutely amazing and speak for themselves. In many ways, the artistry of Steinberg is uniquely his and extremely palpable to the discerning observer. His eye was what first interesting me in architecture, his allegories are both deeply emotionally affecting yet intellectual, and his caricatures are second to none in their humor and perceptiveness.

Warmly recommended.

I've been looking for this item for years, i'm a happy man now i found this on amazon for a very fair prize. I had bought other Steinberg books and catalogues before, but this one kept lingering in my mind, for it was the one i knew from my art school period some 30 years ago, from the library. I borrowed it several times before it was stolen or got lost. I prefer this book over the other Steinberg books i bought, because of the choice of works, and maybe because it was the first time i found out about this amazing artist. Still, comparing versions of works in this and in other books still makes me think this one's the one that gives the best overall picture of what Steinberg has made.
