"Papich (clinical pharmacology, North Carolina State U.) presents a handbook of veterinary drugs for practitioners and students treating small and large companion animals and livestock. Organized alphabetically by generic name, 550 drugs are detailed in terms of trade name, pronunciation, and functional classification; pharmacology and mechanism of action; indications and clinical uses; precautionary information such as adverse effects, contraindications, and interactions; patient monitoring and lab tests; formulations; and dosage. This edition has a companion website, adds 35 new drugs and new evidence-based information for indications as well as updated clinical uses and regulatory requirements. More on drug stability, storage, and compounding are also included. Appendices provide dose calculations and information on controlled substances and prescription writing."

Great portable drug reference for the small animal practitioner,
By
This review is from: Saunders Handbook of Veterinary Drugs, 2e (Handbook of Veterinary Drugs (Saunders)) (Paperback)
I've used several drug references and have settled on two for daily use. First is Saunders for its coverage of the drugs I use, including off-label use of human drugs, without a lot of extraneous details. The problem with Plumb's is that it contains every anecdotal usage ever written up. This makes for a very bulky reference. Unless you have a copy that's been well-tabbed with post-it notes and the useful doses highlighted, Plumb's is more weight than it's worth for me. The other is The North American Companion Animal Formulary. It's condensed, fits into my jacket pocket, and has an excellent index of trade names to generic names as well as a quick index of applicable drugs for a number of conditions.

I am a veterinary student and this book is a great reference for pharmacology class...definitely better than the one that schools typically recommend. Any also way cheaper!
