4.0 out of 5 stars The last hurrah, January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Savage Gorge (Paperback)
Forbes' last novel. He dead. We'll miss him and his yearly output. Black bunting on my Forbes shelves. (Yes, shelves. He writ a bunch of stuff.) Unlike many of the seemingly endless Tweed and gang books, this one stays put in Merry Olde England. This time they're off to the back country of the River Lyne, which runs roughly ENE from Solway Firth south of the border of the Scots lowlands (scotland forever!--ed. note). In the middle of a spot even more nowhere than the moors of Harford, they encounter the memories of civil war at Gunners Gorge, survive attacks, and piece together a puzzle involving the autocratic Bullerton, the obsessive housekeeper Mrs. Shipton, the hostile sisters Sable and Margot, and the helpful supporting cast of stock (or is it stout) British yeomanry. If you like Forbes and the Tweedy gang, this is both a good and historically significant novel. If you don't have a secret yen to putter amongst the roses and lift a pint in the village pub, Forbes may not be for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Devoid of anything a book needs, May 28, 2010
This review is from: The Savage Gorge (Paperback)
If you like reading books without a coherent plotline, stereotypical characters with no depth and a predictable end, you will love this book.
Two women have been brutally murdered in London and Tweed, a kind of secret service superman, and his assistant Paula start working on this case.
The soon come to a sinister village with a sinister Lords sinister family. The visit by speedboat the secret island of an evil billionaire. They blow the island to smithereens. Then they return, escape a very strong storm and some mysterious lanslide. Why they visit the island and what purpose the landslide serves is no further explained. Back in the village they kill the bad ones and that is it.
Well what more can you expect from a story where a father is being told that his two estranged daughters have been brutally killed and he shows no reaction at all - and he is not the murderer....
The good ones mostly driver Maseratis and Audi A8, are superb marksmen and athletes, the bad ones are poor marksmen and also not very fit.
Every additional word on this book is wasted.
