top rung of the Savage novels, August 5, 2003
This review is from: Savage Hero (Savage (Leisure Paperback)) (Mass Market Paperback)
Among the soldiers lying dead alongside Custer is Major Lloyd Wilson, who left behind a wife Mary Beth and a five-year-old son David. Mary Beth had come west to inform her spouse that she wanted a divorce, but now feels guilty as she waits at Fort Kitt for word that she can journey back to her Kentucky home. On the trek east, renegade Indians attack Mary Beth's military escort. They take her and David prisoner, but separate the pair. Chief Brave Wolf, seeking his brother who fought with the Yellow Hair, rescues Mary Beth. Though fearful of him, she entreats him to help her find and save her child. On their trek together, they fall in love, but in the post Little Big Horn battle are not times for a biracial relationship and then there remains Night Horse, a man with no world. Though well written starring two charming lead protagonists and a strong support cast that brings out the aftermath of Custer's Last Stand, SAVAGE HERO in many ways is the typical Cassie Edwards' Indian romance. The story line is Ms. Edwards' trademark paint by numbers tale, but also contains an insightful look at the fall of 1876 approximately three months before the battle. Fans of the author and of the sub-genre will appreciate SAVAGE HERO as few can relate a story as well as Ms. Edward's does with her over thirty "Savage" novels, but this book belongs with the top rung. Mary Beth and Brave Wolf, June 12, 2008
This review is from: Savage Hero (Savage (Leisure Paperback)) (Mass Market Paperback)
Mary Beth had traveled to her husbands fort, with her 5 year old son David, to request a divorce. She does not love her husband as a wife should love her husband and Mary Beth wants them both to be free to find true love. As soon as she informs him that she wants a divorce her husband is drawn away to battle at Little Big Horn. Now the battle is over, the native americans have won, and Mary Beth's husband is a casualty of war. Fearing that her request for a divorce was a distraction to her husband during the battle Mary Beth blames herself for his demise. She heads towards home, with her son, dispairing over the loss of her husband who had been a friend to her since they were children. On the way home her wagon train is attacked, her son stolen and Mary Beth is taken hostage by renegades.
Chief Brave Wolf is on a mission. His mother's health is fading and all she wants is to see her youngest son who disappeared after the battle at Little Big Horn. Brave Wolf is not happy about this quest because he feels his brother, Night Horse, is a traitor to his people. Night Horse left their tribe to join Custer in the fight against the indians, leading the pony soldiers to innocent villages just to enhance his military career and get in the good graces of the legendary general. Brave Wolf is from a peaceful tribe and is trying to find ways to fit into the world of the white man. On Brave Wolf's trek to find his brother he encounters the renegades that kidnapped Mary Beth and is determined to set her free. Of course once she is free Mary Beth does not trust Brave Wolf, how does she know that he is not of the same people who took her son? But Brave Wolf's kindness and concern sway Mary Beth's opinion and eventually she begins to trust Brave Wolf, even confiding that her son was kipnapped by different renegades. Brave Wolf has fallen in love with Mary Beth and has vowed to help her find her son, sending his own warriors out on the search. When his warriors cannot locate her son Mary Beth decides she is going to go to the nearest fort and ask the soldiers to help. The only problem is that Brave Wolf does not trust the soldier in charge of that fort, but he knows he cannot keep Mary Beth from doing everything in her power to locate her son but makes her promise to return so they can be married. What will happen when Mary Beth goes to the fort to request help, especially if she is wearing indian maiden clothing? Can the love they find together overcome the prejudice that they encounter? Will David ever be found? Read this book and see how this all comes together.
This is one of the better Cassie Edwards romance novels I have read so if you are a huge Cassie Edwards fan this book is a must read, I tend to like my romance novels with a little more passion than I tend to find in Cassie Edwards books. Even if you are not a Cassie Edwards fan, but like native american romance novels, I think you will find this book interesting.
