Editorial Reviews

Savage Island is a subtle, though fantastic record. It may take a few listens and one has to get past the light, retro-sounding production, which makes the band sound like they are far off in a corner somewhere. But the Bomboras have nailed the mood perfectly. Some of the songs, all of which are instrumentals, are relatively dark for the surf genre. "Slinky" is a particularly stylish number with thumpity-thump surf-style drums. Whenever the Wurlitzer piano kicks in, the songs really take off. (Many surf and garage bands employ such instruments, but few really know how to play them.) The Bomboras sounded even better on future records after they added a second guitarist to their lineup. But Savage Island, at a compact 25-minute-length, is an enjoyable, adventurous romp through exotic, forbidden islands. ~ Adam Bregman, All Music Guide --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, September 21, 2000

If you love surf music and surf music with a Polynesian twist then this is the album for you. The cover art (by Shag) and the music combine to form an excellent album that you'll swear you must have heard in the late 50's or early 60's, even if you weren't alive back then.

The Bomboras "Savage Island" is pleasant listening for instrumental fans, but nothing more. When I had listened to it I realized that nothing had really stood out and grabbed my attention. If you were having a small dinner party, and wanted unobtrusive background music, this CD might be a good choice. Also, as a guitar fan, I could really do without the organ.

By no means is this a bad disc--but after listening to other "new" surf-guitar groups like the Penetrators, Aqua Velvets and those wild Space Cossacks, this one sounds very tame.

1.0 out of 5 stars A little too much lounge, not enough rock., February 4, 2010

I'm a huge fan of surf rock ex: Man Or Astroman, the Ghastly Ones, The Moon-Rays, etc. So when I heard The Bomboras on Rob Zombie's Halloween Hootenany I thought I'd check them out on their own. To be fair I can only speak for Savage Island, but this album was entirely disappointing. Like I said I am a fan of surf ROCK, but this has no backbone at all. It lacks that certain punch that we love in other bands. It's really more like lounge music. It's fairly soft, meandering and to be frank a bit boring. If you enjoy the jazzier less punk styles of modern surf music then you'll enjoy this album. But if like me, you were expecting a bit more bite, I'd pass on this one.
