4.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Of Tabaran, January 25, 2001
By
This review is from: In a Savage Land (Audio CD)
"In A Savage Land" is a fabulous world music based soundtrack which features two disks. One is the proper score. The second disk features raw DAT records of the music of the Troband Islands, Papua New Guinea. With this soundtrack, David Bridie continues to explore the textures and spirits within Papua New Guinean music and culture. He started this remarkable journey with Not Drowning, Waving's 1990 Tabaran record.(Please someone, release this masterpiece domestically) Haunting, Mysterious and Beautiful at the same time, Bridie had created a soundtrack that takes challenges and yet realizes its debt to a pivitol soundtrack of the Late 1990s, Hanz Zimmer's The Thin Red Line. If you want to question the value of Zimmer's soundtrack, realize that it is being used in the trailers for the Pearl Harbor film being released May 2001. "Savage Land" also evokes the the mood and "magic" of Peter Gabriel's "Passion" and the trance like power of scores by Philip Glass.

"In A Savage Land" frankly is very raw and underproduced. Mr Bridie understands texture better than most working musicians in that "Savage Land" never sounds too polished or clean. Bridie refers to this approach using the Papua New Guinean word "Billas" which means "texture and decoration". In doing so, he thankfully avoids the pratfall of many composers trying to evoke a world music palette in modern film scores. "In a Savage Land" sounds more organic.

Some industry types in Australia agree. ARIA awarded Mr. Bridie with Best Score. The Australian equivalent of the academy awards also awarded "In A Savage Land" best score.

Although Bridie has composed several scores for smaller Australian films, this is his best so far. Also, "In A Savage Land" comes out of a very creative time in Bridie's career which also gave rise to his oustanding solo album "Act of Free Choice" as well as the amazing Telek record "Serious Tam" on Peter Gabriel's Real World record label. All works are highly recommended.
